Vienna,Austria - The Austrian Peopel’s Party (ÖVP) is facing sharp criticism from the Freedom party of Austria (FPÖ) over its stance on the Mercosur trade agreement. FPÖ General Secretary Michael Schnedlitz accused Chancellor Karl Nehammer of betraying Austrian farmers by supporting the agreement’s trade provisions while rejecting its political aspects.

Schnedlitz criticized Nehammer’s decision to accept the trade portion of the Mercosur agreement,arguing that it would flood the Austrian market with cheap South American agricultural products,putting austrian farmers,who adhere to stricter regulations,at a disadvantage. “Betrayed, sold and mocked to – that’s the brutal way Nehammer and his ÖVP treat the peasants!” he exclaimed.
The FPÖ General Secretary also pointed out that nehammer’s stance contradicts a 2019 resolution by the EU subcommittee of the National Council, which called for the rejection of the Mercosur agreement. “This would put Nehammer on the same level as the irregular green minister Gewessler,” Schnedlitz said, referring to Austria’s green Party Minister for Climate Action, Surroundings, energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, Leonore Gewessler.
Schnedlitz further accused the ÖVP of hypocrisy, stating that while top officials in the party’s farmers’ association publicly oppose the Mercosur agreement, Nehammer is willing to accept its detrimental terms. ”It seems that the ÖVP is not only accelerating the ‘death of farmers’ caused by its wrong policies but also shamefully playing the farmers who are struggling to exist for fools!” he declared.
The FPÖ remains the only political party in Austria that consistently opposes the Mercosur trade agreement, emphasizing its commitment to supporting local farmers. “We libertarians know what our farmers do for food supply, landscape care and as cultural guardians for our country and our people. Therefore,we will not watch for a second as the ÖVP destroys the economic basis for living with their loyalty to the EU and their obsession with power!” Schnedlitz concluded.
