After a month-long manhunt, authorities have apprehended Christian de Jesús R., the young man accused of brutally assaulting his girlfriend, Melanie Barragán, in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas.
The arrest took place yesterday in Escobedo, nuevo León, following a joint operation between law enforcement agencies from both states. The suspect had been on the run for 35 days.
tamaulipas prosecutor Irving Barrios Mojica confirmed the arrest, stating that Christian de Jesús R. will be presented before the judge who issued the arrest warrant.
Melanie, who bravely shared her story on social media, expressed her gratitude for the support she received. “My attacker was finally captured, thank you all very much,” she wrote on Instagram.
The arrest followed an intense mobilization of agents from the State Investigation agency in Escobedo’s Fernando A. Milpa neighborhood.
Prosecutor Barrios Mojica emphasized the commitment to justice in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “As an inevitable result of the intelligence coordination and exchange of data between the Attorney General’s office of Nuevo León and the Attorney General’s Office of Tamaulipas, the arrest of Christian de Je-sús R. was achieved, who will be placed at the disposal of the competent authority. There will be no impunity for those who attack the women of Tamaulipas.”
last Tuesday, the Tamaulipas prosecutor’s office announced they were actively pursuing Christian de Jesús R., offering a reward of 200,000 pesos for information leading to his capture.
Melanie’s Recovery
Melanie, now 20 years old, is thankfully out of danger. Following the attack, she was hospitalized at Regional General Hospital number 6 in Ciudad Madero, where she underwent surgery for two facial fractures and significant damage to her left eye.
The assault occurred during a Halloween party. An argument between the couple escalated, leading Christian to physically attack Melanie. Danna, one of Melanie’s friends, attempted to intervene and was also assaulted.
In a disturbing turn of events, Christian reportedly visited the hospital where Melanie was being treated, attempting to see her and kiss her. however,Melanie’s mother intervened, preventing the encounter. At that time, no formal complaint had been filed against him.
While recovering from surgery, Melanie revealed that Christian had sent her text messages pleading for mercy, expressing fear of a lengthy prison sentence if apprehended.
On November 7, Melanie was discharged from the hospital in a wheelchair, accompanied by her family and members of the state prosecutor’s office. She had shown significant advancement in her health after undergoing eye and cheek surgery the day before.
