Larry McReynolds, a NASCAR legend, embarked on his remarkable journey in the sport over four decades ago. In 1980, at the tender age of 21, McReynolds packed his belongings into a U-Haul trailer hitched to his trusty 1971 Ford Pinto and set off for Greenville, North Carolina. This marked the beginning of a 20-year career as a crew member, with 16 of those years spent leading teams from the pit box.
McReynolds’s dedication and talent propelled him to the forefront of NASCAR. In a recent interview, he reflected on his illustrious career, highlighting both triumphs and tribulations. “My mom and dad looked at me and said, ‘this is the craziest thing we ever heard. You’ll be back in six months. You’ll be broke, you’ll be hungry. We’ll feed you, but we won’t bail you out of debt.’ 43 years later I’m proud to say that I’m still here. I didn’t go broke and I didn’t go hungry,” McReynolds shared.
one of McReynolds’s most memorable seasons was 1992, when he served as crew chief for driver Davey Allison. The duo experienced an emotional rollercoaster, marked by both exhilarating victories and heartbreaking setbacks. “You’d be hard pressed to find a driver and a team that had so many highs and so many lows in one season,” McReynolds recalled. “We won five races, including the Daytona 500.We dominated the All-Star race for the second year in a row. We where leading the points going into the final race of the season at Atlanta and got caught up in a wreck.”
“We went through a period of time, in the spring and early summer, when we were winning one week and wrecking one week. One week,we figured out how to do both in the same night at the All-Star race,” he continued. “Davey lost his grandfather in spring of that year. Davey busted up some ribs in a wreck at Bristol. We won the next week at North Wilkesboro, but Davey barely practiced the car. The wreck at Pocono was the turning point of our season. A lot of people say we lost the championship at Atlanta when we got caught up in the wreck, but in my book,we lost it at Pocono in July. After that, Davey had to have surgery. We spent the next six to eight weeks trying to get him comfortable in the car.”
Although McReynolds and Allison fell short of the championship title that year, their partnership remains etched in NASCAR history. McReynolds’s expertise and Allison’s driving prowess captivated fans and left an indelible mark on the sport.
The year 1997 marked a turning point for NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt. After securing seven championships and numerous victories, the aging driver faced a winless season, leaving his crew chief, Larry McReynolds, searching for answers as thay prepared for Earnhardt’s 20th Daytona 500 start in February 1998.
What followed would become a moment etched in racing history. McReynolds and Earnhardt achieved the pinnacle of their careers, securing a triumphant victory in the 1998 Daytona 500.
“I knew how bad he wanted to win that race,” McReynolds recalled. ”The man had won 30-something races at Daytona. He’d won everything from IROC,Xfinity Series,Duels, the Clash, the July race,he just hadn’t sealed the deal with the 500.”
“I remember being in victory lane. It was such a surreal moment. I remember taking a step back and taking it all in.”
Following his triumphant career as a crew chief, which concluded in 2000, McReynolds transitioned to broadcasting, joining FOX Sports and becoming a fixture in their NASCAR coverage for the past 24 seasons.
