The Kremlin said today that the US decision to send another $725 million military aid package to Ukraine shows the outgoing Biden administration is determined to add fuel to the war there to ensure the conflict continues.
In his announcement yesterday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken says that the new aid package includes Stinger and Himars missiles, drones and mines.
Asked about the aid package, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: “The current government is pursuing its goals, its firm line is not to let this war end. The Biden administration is doing everything it can to add fuel to the fire. At the same time, this and other aid packages cannot change the course of events, cannot affect the dynamics on the front line,” Peskov said.
Regarding the possible accession of Ukraine to NATO, he commented that this would constitute an “unacceptable” threat to Russia at a time when Kiev is putting pressure on its Western allies to invite it to join the Alliance.
“Such a possible decision is unacceptable for us, because it would be a threatening event for us,” Peskov said.
The US announcement marks a sharp increase in so-called presidential authorization (PDA), a key element of a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine passed in April that allows the president to move defense goods and services from US stockpiles in an emergency .
Recent presidential authorization announcements have typically ranged from $125 million to $250 million.
President Biden has about 4 billion. dollars with 5 billion dollars of the mechanism already approved by Congress and expected to be made available to Ukraine before President-elect Donald Trump takes office on January 20.
