Premier League Captains Clash Over Rainbow Laces Campaign
The Premier League’s annual “Stonewall Rainbow Laces” campaign, a tribute to the historic Stonewall riots and a push for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports, has sparked controversy this year, with two team captains opting out of wearing the symbolic rainbow armbands.
Ipswich Town’s Sam Morsy, a midfielder on the English National team, chose not to wear the armband during his team’s match against Nottingham Forest, citing religious beliefs as his reason.
"We are a fully inclusive club that welcomes everyone. We support the Premier League campaign and the LGBT community to encourage inclusion. During this year, members of our men’s and women’s teams visited the LGBT foundation’s weekly football sessions, while the club applied for solidarity and inclusion with Nottingham Forest before the game,” Ipswich Town stated in a press release. "At the same time, we respect the decision of our captain, Sam Morsy, who has decided not to wear the rainbow armband because of his religious beliefs."
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, although wearing the rainbow armband, sparked conflict by writing "I love Jesus" over it during his team’s draw against Newcastle. This act directly violated FA rules which prohibit political, religious, or personal slogans on player kits. While initial reports suggested Guehi might face sanctions, the FA ultimately issued him a warning.
Guehi’s potential punishment raised questions about the balance between personal expression and the promotion of inclusivity.
