Hungary Rolls Out Digital ID, Bringing Government Services to Smartphones
Budapest, Hungary – Imagine managing driver’s license renewals, scheduling doctor appointments, or even obtaining a legal document, all from the comfort of your couch. This futuristic vision is becoming reality in Hungary with the launch of the Digital Citizenship Program.
Starting January 16, 2025, Hungarian citizens can ditch the paperwork and embrace a world of digital administration.
"From now on, everything we need is in our pocket: on our phone," proclaims the Hungarian government, promising a streamlined and convenient experience.
No more lost paperwork or frustrating waits at government offices. The Digital Citizen application empowers users to access essential state portals like magyarorszag.hu, eSZJA, and EgészséAblak with ease.
" No more remembering complex passwords or looking for paperwork!"
Forget complicated passwords with a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. The Digital Citizen app employs QR code identification for secure and swift access to various government services.
Data at Your Fingertips
The app acts as a secure digital wallet, storing personal and vehicle information. This digital repository means always having the necessary documentation readily available, eliminating the need to carry physical papers. Citizens can even share this information electronically with authorities, such as during a routine traffic stop.
"Everything is easier without papers," the government emphasizes.
Simplified Processes, Digital Solutions
Booking appointments for government services is now a breeze. The application allows users to schedule appointments in advance for common requests, saving valuable time and eliminating long wait times.
The app also streamlines bureaucratic processes. Digital signatures are gradually being introduced, allowing citizens to electronically sign contracts and documents securely and efficiently. Obtaining essential documents like a moral certificate is now just a tap away.
Getting Started
Replacing the traditional one-factor Customer Gate system, the Digital Citizen app utilizes two-factor identification for enhanced security.
To access this new world of digital governance, Hungarian citizens will need to download and register for the Digital Citizen app. Those who’ve already downloaded the app but haven’t registered can do so streamlined and secure way: in person at government offices or digitally using an activated ePersonal ID card issued after June 23, 2021.
For digital registration, users simply take a photo of the back of their ePersonal card, enter the card’s PIN code, and then hold their phone close to the card for verification. Upon activation, the app’s extensive suite of features for official administration becomes immediately available.
