My body insecurities give me ‘terrible anxiety’

Luke Evans: Hollywood Actor Opens Up About Body Image Struggles

Luke Evans, the Welsh actor known for his roles in action-packed films like "Fast & Furious" and "Beauty and the Beast," recently revealed a surprising vulnerability: he struggles with anxiety over his body image.

Speaking on the podcast "How To Fail With Elizabeth Day," the 45-year-old star admitted, “I still sometimes go to the gym and just feel very anxious. I look at myself in the mirror and just go, ‘you don’t look good enough’, or ‘you’re letting it go’.”

Despite regularly portraying physically imposing characters, Evans shared that the pressure of maintaining a specific physique takes a toll. “I look at my face – the terrible part of my industry is that you’re just reminded constantly of the decades of film you’ve done when you had not a crease on the face and not one grey stubble," he said. "Whereas all my stubble is now grey… it can be overwhelming.”

Evans acknowledged the industry’s influence on body image expectations, while also recognizing the necessity of staying fit for his demanding roles. "Part of that isn’t completely bad,” he conceded, “I think it gives you a little something to fight for, but it can be overwhelming.”

The star highlighted the irony of his profession, where he’s celebrated for his physical prowess yet still grapples with insecurities.

"If I was not an actor,” he shared, “I would probably let it all go. Staying fit and in a certain physical fitness level now is definitely doing my job. I wouldn’t care so much, but it is part of my job."

Evans’ candidness sheds light on the pressures faced by celebrities, even those who seemingly embody Hollywood perfection. His openness about his struggles may resonate with many, reminding us that self-doubt and insecurities can affect anyone, regardless of their profession or public image.
