US woman admits drink-driving in crash that killed bride

Tragic End to Wedding Night: Bride Killed in DUI Crash, Groom Speaks of Loss

A South Carolina newlywed’s dream wedding celebration turned into a nightmare when a drunk driver slammed into the golf cart carrying the happy couple just hours after they said their vows. Samantha Miller, still radiant in her wedding gown, tragically lost her life in the April 2023 crash on Folly Beach.

Jamie Lee Komoroski, the driver responsible, pleaded guilty to felony DUI resulting in death, receiving a 25-year prison sentence. Prosecutors alleged that Komoroski spent the evening bar hopping, ultimately driving at over twice the speed limit when her vehicle collided with the golf cart transporting the newlyweds, Samantha and Aric Hutchinson, along with Aric’s brother-in-law.

A blood test revealed Komoroski’s blood alcohol content was three times the legal limit, according to a state report. Her reckless actions not only took the life of Samantha but also left Aric with serious injuries, including a brain injury and broken bones.

"On the golf cart, she told me she didn’t want the night to end and I kissed her on the forehead and then the next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital," Aric Hutchinson recounted in a heart-wrenching statement.

Though choked with grief, Aric addressed the court, sharing his final memory of Samantha. He later expressed solace in the sentence, stating, "I do think she’s sorry. However, that doesn’t change the fact that Sam’s not here, my wife’s not here, the family we planned, all of our injuries. So that’ll take some time for sure."

Komoroski expressed remorse and took full responsibility for her actions in court. Even with the justice served, the tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences of drunk driving.

As the nation continues to grapple with the dangers of impaired driving, Samantha’s story serves as a stark call for responsibility and vigilance on our roads.
