Italian Submarine Commander Demonstrates Moral Courage in WWII Drama "The Commander"
"The Commander," an intense Second World War drama directed by Edoardo de Angelis, dives into the heart of the Battle of the Atlantic, showcasing an act of humanity amidst the conflict.
Based on a true story, the film, which premiered as the opening gala at the Venice Film Festival, celebrates the bravery of Italian submarine commander Salvatore Todaro (played by Pierfrancesco Favino) during Italy’s fascist regime. Favaro’s portrayal is captivating, showcasing both the subtle strength of his moral compass and the physical toll of a harrowing back injury. The film begins with Todaro receiving grim news: neglecting doctors prescribe him a crude corset, adding insult to injury with the callous declaration, "Fascism is pain."
The narrative plunges into high stakes when Todaro is forced to sink a Belgian merchant ship. Although the ship fired on his submarine and carried supplies intended for the British, Todaro feels a pang of sympathy for the ship’s distressed crew. Driven by conscience, he makes a bold decision: to rescue the Belgian sailors and transport them to safety.
Accepting the weight of this moral dilemma, Todaro offers his own crew’s limited rations and cramped quarters to the Belgians. He warns them of the harrowing consequences, explaining that when he next dives, the conning tower will flood, forcing some to sacrifice their lives. The Belgians must determine who among them will remain in the doomed space.
Inevitably, whispers of "fascists" arise, and simmering discontent erupts into sabotage and mutiny.
The film, reminiscent of classics like "Das Boot," is stripped of unnecessary flourish, presenting a straightforward and gripping tale of wartime choices. Favino’s performance, rife with raw masculinity, anchors the narrative.
Despite its focus on a single act of heroism, subtle familiarities in Todaro’s home life provide a counterpoint, perhaps intended to assure audiences of his unwavering devotion to his family amidst the pressures of war.
"The Commander," an ode to individual moral courage amidst global conflict, opens in U.S. theaters December 6th, followed by its digital release on December 23rd.
