Five Common Medications Can Cause Dementia

Common Medications Linked to Dementia Risk, Says Los Angeles Anesthetist

A TikTok video by Los Angeles-based anesthetist Dr. Zain Hasan has sparked conversation about the potential link between certain common medications and dementia. The video, which garnered attention from Hasan’s over 635,000 followers, highlights five medications that he says may increase the risk of cognitive decline when used for extended periods.

While viewers should always consult their doctors before making any changes to their medication regimen, Hasan’s claims raise important questions about the long-term effects of these widely prescribed drugs.

Hasan’s first concern is antihistamines, commonly used to treat allergy symptoms. These medications, including familiar names like Benadryl, can alleviate symptoms like runny nose, itchy eyes, and hives. However, Hasan warns that prolonged use of these "anticholinergic" drugs can potentially contribute to dementia. "If someone has motion sickness, they can use this popular drug to treat it," Hasan explains, highlighting the easy accessibility of these medications.

Next, Hasan turns to opiates like morphine and codeine, noting their potential to cause sedation and, thus, potentially increase dementia risk. "Anything that causes sedation for a long period of time can probably end up causing dementia," Hasan states. The addictive nature of opiates, often used as powerful painkillers, adds another layer of concern.

Hasan also points to Omeprazole, a medication used to treat conditions like heartburn and GERD, as potentially risky. He explains that Omeprazole can increase beta-amyloid in the brain, a protein known to be involved in Alzheimer’s disease.

The fourth medication on Hasan’s list is benzodiazepines, a class of drugs often prescribed for anxiety, insomnia, and seizures. These depressants, while effective for short-term use, can have long-term neurological consequences. "If used ‘for a long period of time’, said Dr. Hasan, ‘it can cause dementia. It makes entire sense. It goes into your central nervous system, it numbs your entire brain, it helps with anxiety, it helps with alcohol withdrawal.’"

Finally, Hasan discusses Tricyclic Antidepressants, potent medications used to treat depression.

The common thread woven throughout Hasan’s explanation is the impact of these drugs on the brain. He emphasizes this by stating, "Anything that sedates your brain for a long period of time, including anesthesia, can cause dementia."

While Hasan’s TikTok video has sparked awareness about these potential risks, it’s crucial to remember that correlation does not equal causation. Talk to your doctor about any concerns you have regarding your medications and discuss alternative options if necessary.
