Veteran Russian General Deployed to Syria Amid Rising Tensions
Aleppo, Syria – In a dramatic turn of events, the Russian military has dispatched veteran General Alexander Chaiko to Syria amidst a renewed offensive by Turkish-backed forces. This move comes after reports of significant territorial gains by these forces in northern Syria, including the battleground city of Aleppo.
"The Kremlin has taken urgent measures and sent Colonel General Alexander Chaiko to help the head of Russian forces in Syria, Sergei Kissel," a source close to the Kremlin reportedly revealed. The source added that Kissel had been "removed" from his position following Russia’s military setbacks in Ukraine.
While Syrian forces have managed to reclaim some ground and stall the advance in the strategic Hama region, the Russian air force has taken on the primary role in counteroffensive operations. On December 1st alone, Su-34, Su-24, and Su-30 fighter jets conducted relentless airstrikes against Turkish-aligned proxies near Aleppo, Hama, and Idlib.
This deployment marks General Chaiko’s return to the Syrian theater. He previously oversaw Russian operations in the region from October 2019 to March 2020, successfully negotiating patrol zones with Turkish forces and overseeing the withdrawal of Kurdish forces from a security corridor along the Syrian-Turkish border.
During his previous tenure, Chaiko navigated an incredibly volatile situation, fending off attacks on Russian personnel while simultaneously working to rebuild Syrian infrastructure and revitalize the national economy. His experience and proven track record in Syria clearly position him as a key figure in de-escalating the present crisis.
As for the current situation, reports indicate that Chaiko arrived in Syria in recent days to personally assess the evolving conditions.
