Japan museum named “world’s most beautiful” at French award ceremony

Japanese Museum Dazzles, Wins Global Design Prize

The stunning Simose Art Museum, nestled along the picturesque Seto Inland Sea in Japan, has been crowned the world’s most beautiful museum. This recognition came from the prestigious Prix Versailles awards, which celebrate exceptional architecture and design globally.

This year marked the inaugural inclusion of a museum category in the awards, adding to the competition’s renown. Notably, the Simose Art Museum triumphed over other architectural masterpieces, including the A4 Art Museum in China and the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Designed by renowned Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, the 2023-opened museum showcases a unique blend of innovation and artistry. Ban, a recipient of the coveted Pritzker Architecture Prize, intended to create a flowing, adaptable space. The museum features eight mobile galleries housed in a dazzling structure of colored glass walls, reflecting shimmering light over a tranquil reflecting pool.

"I believe the innovative approach, such as the mobile gallery floating on water and the wooden structure, was recognized," Ban said. "This was the first occasion I was given the chance to design freely, and I truly appreciate everyone involved."

This interplay of modern design and natural elements creates an unforgettable visual experience, seamlessly blending the museum’s interior with the breathtaking coastal landscape.

The Prix Versailles jury lauded the project, describing it on their website as: "galleries with walls made of colored glass that light up at night over the water of a reflecting pool… This symbolic scenery amplifies the physical scenery of the Seto Inland Sea with a nod to the beauty of the Setouchi Islands ."

The Simose Art Museum’s victory serves as a testament to the power of innovative design and its ability to seamlessly integrate with natural beauty. It also highlights the global recognition Japanese architects continue to earn for pushing boundaries and pushing the limits of creativity.
