As the European Union (EU) considers landmark proposals for smoke-free environments, Austria’s Health Minister Johannes Rauch is pushing back against what he calls "fake news" circulating in the media.

Rauch defended the proposals, stating, " "Fake news was being spread in some of the tabloid media," Rauch said ahead of a meeting of EU health ministers in Brussels. “It’s just a compliment."

The EU meeting, bringing together representatives from the 27 member states, will decide whether to adopt the proposals, which aim to create smoke-free public spaces across Europe. While individual countries will ultimately determine how and whether to implement these measures, Rauch emphasized the value of preliminary discussions at the EU level.

"These consultations and debates at the European level would help to make decisions," he said.

The proposals have ignited debate, with concerns raised about the potential impact on businesses and individual liberties. Meanwhile, public health advocates argue that the measures are essential to protect non-smokers from secondhand smoke and reduce smoking rates.

The outcome of the EU meeting could have significant implications for public health across Europe and could inspire similar initiatives in other parts of the world.
