Russia-friendly candidates surge in Romania’s elections, a worrying signal for Ukraine

A Shocking Upset: Romanian Elections Signal Potential Shift in Support for Ukraine

Romania’s recent elections surprised many, revealing a significant rise in support for far-right parties critical of their government’s strong backing of Ukraine. The outcome raises concerns about a potential shift in Romania’s pro-Western stance and its unwavering support for its embattled neighbor.

Calin Georgescu, a controversial figure known for conspiracy theories and admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin, emerged as the frontrunner in the first round of the presidential election with nearly 23% of the vote. While he didn’t secure an outright victory, his success was a shock given pre-election polling.

"We must stand by Ukraine and its people," outgoing President Klaus Iohannis declared earlier this year, clearly stating Romania’s commitment to supporting democracy and Ukraine’s territorial integrity. His message resonated with many, but Georgescu’s appeal tapped into a growing wave of disillusionment with the political establishment and economic woes.

Furthermore, nationalist parties, while not securing an outright majority, tripled their presence in the Romanian parliament, amplifying anxieties about the potential for a shift in Romania’s foreign policy.

Georgescu’s anti-establishment message found resonance among voters weary of the war in Ukraine and fearing their country could be dragged into the conflict.

“Have you been there? Did you see it with your own eyes?” Georgescu challenged during a campaign event, dismissing the severity of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He has praised Putin as a leader who “loves his country," raising alarm bells about his intentions for Romania’s relationship with both Russia and Ukraine.

Adding to the complexity, the election was marred by accusations of TikTok bias favoring Georgescu and Russian-linked cyberattacks aimed at disrupting the democratic process. Additionally, allegations of irregularities required a recount and validation from the Constitutional Court.

While George Simion, the leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), was barred from entering Ukraine, his party secured second place in the parliamentary elections, trailed only by the incumbent Social Democrats.

Another far-right contender, Diana Sosoaca, garnered roughly 7.5% of the vote with her pro-Russian stance, while the Party of Young People (POT), associated with Georgescu, received approximately 6.2%.

Romania’s pivotal role in supporting Ukraine cannot be overstated. Sharing a 380-mile border with its embattled neighbor, Romania has become a crucial transit route for Ukrainian agricultural exports and a haven for over 170,000 Ukrainian refugees.

Romania has demonstrated its commitment to Ukraine in tangible ways, providing vital military, economic, and humanitarian aid. Notably, Romania has supplied Ukraine with a full Patriot air defense battery, bolstering its defense against Russian aggression.

The country stands as one of the few to openly support Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO and the European Union, while actively training Ukrainian pilots and introducing training programs for Ukrainian Marines. The recent bilateral treaty solidifying the security ties between the two countries underscores Romania’s dedication to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

However, with a divided electorate and a far-right surge, Romania’s future role as a steadfast ally of Ukraine hangs in the balance. If Georgescu triumphs in the presidential runoff, his overarching views on NATO and Ukraine could potentially reshape Romania’s relationship with its eastern neighbor

"There will be a change in Romania’s position towards a much more neutral stance," political science professor Sergiu Miscoiu stated, expressing concern over potential changes woven by Georgescu, if elected.

The outcome of the second round of the presidential election will undoubtedly have profound impacts on Romania’s stance towards Ukraine and its role in regional security. The world watches as Romania grapples with its shifting political landscape and potential repercussions for a nation battling for its survival.
