Jealous Rage Leads to Deadly Shooting in Guatemala
A celebration turned into a nightmare in Guatemala, as a night of festivities ended in a fatal shooting stemming from a fit of jealousy.
Myson Quijej, 30, is accused of murdering his partner, Flower Maria Pop, after a heated argument erupted during a patron saint celebration in Santa Catalina La Tinta, Alta Verapaz. The couple, who traveled from Coban for the event, had been enjoying the festivities when a man approached Pop and tried to dance with her, sparking anger in Quijej.
Despite the altercation, the couple continued to drink and later secured a room for the night. However, their evening turned tragic when their dispute escalated dangerously.
As tensions reached boiling point, Quijej allegedly pulled out a gun and fired two shots, striking Pop in the neck and shoulder. The aggressor then fled the scene, leaving the weapon near his victim’s body.

Hours after the tragedy, Quijej surrendered himself to authorities, claiming he felt targeted by security forces. The National Civil Police (PNC) is now conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting and will proceed with the appropriate legal charges.
This heartbreaking incident sheds light on the widespread issue of gender violence in Guatemala. Tragically, arguments fueled by jealousy often escalate into deadly acts of femicide.
Authorities have urged the public to report any instances of violence to prevent such tragedies from occurring. This case serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the root causes of violence against women and girls globally.
