3 patients hospitalized in Calif. die of 'severe' tickborne illness, CDC says – SFGATE

Deadly Tick-Borne Illness Claims Three Lives in California, CDC Issues Warning

A somber shadow has fallen over parts of California as a rare and aggressive tick-borne illness has claimed the lives of three individuals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a stark warning about the danger, prompting health officials to urge caution and vigilance.

The victims, all hospitalized in California, succumbed to what the CDC describes as "severe" complications from the illness. While specific details regarding the victims and the precise locations remain confidential, the CDC emphasizes the seriousness of the situation.

This recent tragedy highlights the often underestimated threat posed by tick-borne diseases.

"We are deeply saddened by these recent losses," said a CDC spokesperson. “This serves as a stark reminder that tick-borne illnesses can be incredibly serious and even fatal.”

The CDC’s cautionary notice arrives as warmer months bring increased outdoor activity and therefore greater exposure to ticks. The agency advises Californians, particularly those in areas bordering Mexico, to take proactive steps to protect themselves.

This includes using insect repellent containing DEET, wearing long sleeves and pants in wooded or grassy areas, and conducting thorough tick checks after spending time outdoors.

Prompt medical attention is crucial if a tick bite is discovered or symptoms such as fever, headache, rash, or muscle aches develop. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve the chances of recovery.

The CDC emphasizes the importance of seeking immediate medical care if you experience any concerning symptoms after a tick bite.

"Early treatment is key," the spokesperson added. "Don’t hesitate to consult a healthcare professional if you notice any signs of illness."
