West Hartford Strikes Out for Literacy with "Bowling for Books"
The Rotary Club of West Hartford is gearing up for its 11th annual book drive, an initiative aimed at enriching the lives of disadvantaged students across Greater Hartford. This year, the drive expands beyond online donations to include the exciting return of physical book donations, culminating in a unique community event: "Bowling for Books."
Mark your calendars for December 15, 2024, as Lessard Lanes in Plainville, Connecticut transforms into a literary hotspot. From noon to 2:30 p.m., families, friends, and generous community members are invited to participate in a fun-filled bowling event to raise funds and collect crucial reading materials for local students in need.
Adding to the excitement, beloved local children’s author Daniel Howell, known for his heartwarming book "Bee 4 Goodnight," will be making a special appearance along with his iconic "Buzz Buggy." Howell will be on hand to sign copies of his book and meet young readers, creating a memorable experience for all attendees.
"We are thrilled to bring the book drive back for its 11th year!" says Bennett Forrest, Rotarian and event chair. “What’s even more exciting is that we are reintroducing an in-person element by hosting the ‘Bowling for Books’ event. Over the years, we’ve donated over 10,000 books and raised more than $20,000, and we are looking forward to taking the drive to the next level.”
Throughout the campaign, various drop-off locations will be available for those wishing to donate physical books, including Aiken Elementary School, King Philip Middle School, and during the "Bowling for Books" event itself. Whether you’re a book enthusiast, a bowling aficionado, or simply passionate about supporting literacy, there are multiple ways to get involved.
Donations can be made directly through the Rotary Club’s website.
Participants are encouraged to register as teams, gather support from friends and family, and sponsor bowlers to maximize the impact of the drive.
The "Bowling for Books" event promises to be a delightful blend of entertainment, community engagement, and a meaningful cause.
