Spain: Arrests for drug smuggling with drones from Morocco –

Spanish police today announced the dismantling of a drug-trafficking network that transported cannabis to Spain from Morocco, using Ukrainian-made drones with an electric range of 50 kilometers.

The criminal organization was dismantled in Algeciras, in the southernmost part of Spain, and was “apparently engaged in importing hashish (…) from Morocco with the help of drones,” Spanish police said in a press release.

The drones, which could carry up to 10 kilograms of drugs per trip, “were manufactured in Ukraine and then transported by road to the southern part of the country,” the press release added, adding that authorities arrested 10 people, including of which 7 were placed in temporary custody.

The police authorities of Ukraine and Poland cooperated in the operation.

According to police, the large, improvised drones allowed the accused to “cross the distance between Morocco and Spain by flying over the waters in the Strait of Gibraltar and return after dropping the drugs in the country without having to land.”

During the police operation, three such aircraft, one of which was under construction, were seized, as well as devices to control them remotely, tools to repair them and “significant amounts of cash and quantities of narcotics”, which they would enter Spain via drone.
