And this will only become more difficult in the future as the number of people with dementia increases, especially as there are fewer and fewer healthcare workers available."

"We mostly look at what someone can still do to be able to live independently and at home for longer, and do that in an enjoyable way, with a solid network around you that you can fall back on," says Zuidhof.

This "dementia-friendly area" concept draws on a variety of resources, including family members, volunteers, neighbors, and case managers, creating a safety net of individuals who can provide companionship, assistance with daily tasks, and emotional support.

While the US healthcare system faces unique challenges, the Dutch experience with Geriant offers valuable insights. By leveraging community resources and focusing on individual capabilities, the US might develop similar strategies to care for its aging population, ensuring those with dementia can live with dignity and support in the comfort of their own homes.
