Polish Pop Icon Natalia Kukulska Faces Backlash for Public Smoking After Vocalizing Anti-Smoking Stance
Polish singer-songwriter Natalia Kukulska, celebrated for her soulful voice and enduring presence in the music scene, recently sparked controversy after being spotted smoking at a celebratory event for her latest album release.
The incident unfolded days after the launch of Kukulska’s new album, with the artist hosting a gathering in Warsaw for friends and colleagues in the music industry. Amid the jubilant atmosphere, paparazzi captured images of a visibly relaxed Kukulska seemingly unconcerned about the "no smoking" sign as she indulged in a cigarette.
Adding fuel to the fire, Kukulska was also photographed discarding the cigarette butt on the pavement rather than in a nearby trash receptacle.
The incident raised eyebrows given Kukulska’s past public statements against smoking.
In a previous interview, she candidly stated, "In my case with smoking, it turned out that priorities made me forget about it. Priorities, i.e., voice. There are people who can smoke cigarettes and it does not affect the sound of their voice in any way. Sometimes some people smoke even to destroy it, and they see it as a good effect, because it affects the character of the voice, making it more interesting and sharper. This is harmful to me. It was much harder for me to sing."
Continuing, Kukulska emphasized, "As the stepdaughter of Professor Jerzy Wojciechowski, who for years has been advocating in Poland not to smoke, I am a person who is against this. It happens to me at parties… I don’t know why cigarettes are a bad thing and give a feeling like this: ‘Here’s another cigarette, dot on it.’ This is rude and unreasonable because cigarettes are not good for your health. I do not recommend smoking”.
The discrepancy between Kukulska’s past pronouncements and her recent actions has left some fans questioning her commitment to the anti-smoking cause. This incident serves as a reminder that even public figures, who often preach about certain issues, can sometimes struggle with aligning their actions with their words.
