Brace Yourself: Arctic Air and Winter Storms Batter the U.S.
News of a historic lake-effect snowstorm brought a wave of freezing temperatures sweeping down over the US. After many enjoyed Thanksgiving, a barrage of weather events has forced a quick return to winter realities for much of the country.
Communities around the Great Lakes are grappling with piles of snowfall mere weeks after Thanksgiving celebrations. This relentless lake-effect storm dumped an incredible 3 to 5 feet of snow in Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania. The sheer volume of snow, coupled with impactful winds created hazardous travel conditions as people attempt to return from holiday getaways. Some areas could still see an additional foot or more of snow before the storm finally begins to wind down.

But the Great Lakes region isn’t the only target for winter’s wrath. A formidable Alberta clipper is poised to dive down from Canada, carrying a blanket of snow and frigid air across the northern tier states. This sweeping weather system is forecast to impact over a dozen states, bringing a wintry mix to the Northeast by Thursday.
Adding to the chill, a widespread Arctic blast will deliver plunging temperatures across the US, reaching even the typically mild Southeast. The Polar vortex’s icy breath will likely force many Americans to seek cover from the bitter cold in the coming days.
