Alpine’s Ocon Out, Rising Star Doohan In for Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
Esteban Ocon will be stepping out of his Alpine seat for the final race of the Formula 1 season in Abu Dhabi, replaced by promising young driver Jack Doohan. This change marks the end of Ocon’s five-year journey with the French team, a tenure highlighted by three podium finishes and a triumphant victory at the 2021 Hungarian GP.
Alpine announced the surprise shakeup on December 2nd, explaining that the move allows Ocon to join Haas for their post-season testing in Abu Dhabi. This early start with his new team for the 2025 season is a valuable opportunity for Ocon.
"Reserve driver Jack Doohan will take part in the Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix in place of Esteban Ocon," read the Alpine statement. "This change will allow Esteban to take part in the final season tests with Haas. Jack Doohan, already announced as an official driver for 2025 alongside Pierre Gasly, will race with the number 61.”
Alpine team principal Oliver Oakes voiced enthusiasm for the change, citing the benefits for both drivers. "It’s good to give our future driver Doohan an immediate opportunity – just as Esteban will be able to start his next chapter early. It is right to help each other.”
Doohan, son of five-time motorcycle racing World Champion Mick Doohan, will also participate in the Abu Dhabi test session, furthering his integration into the Alpine team as he prepares for his full-time debut in 2025.
