Qatar Inks Milestone LNG Deal to Fuel China’s Energy Needs
February 2, 2024: In a move that underscores the booming global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG), state-owned Qatar Energy has secured a long-term agreement with Shell to supply three million tons of LNG annually to China. This significant deal, commencing in January 2025, further cements Qatar’s position as a leading LNG exporter and highlights China’s unwavering appetite for cleaner energy sources.
This agreement marks the eleventh LNG supply contract signed between Qatar Energy and Shell, underscoring the strength of their long-standing partnership. “We are pleased to enter into this long-term agreement for liquefied natural gas with our strategic partner Shell. This agreement will help meet Shell’s customer demand,” said Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs and CEO of Qatar Energy.
"This agreement represents the eleventh sales contract between the two companies for the supply of liquefied natural gas, and is a clear testament to our strong and long-term partnership, and our continued ability to meet the various requirements of our institution. customers and partners,” Al Kaabi added.
China, the world’s largest importer of LNG, received a record 79 million tons of supercooled fuel in 2021. This commitment to LNG aligns with China’s efforts to reduce its reliance on coal and transition to cleaner energy sources. Qatar, the world’s third-largest LNG exporter after the United States and Australia, exported a substantial 73 million tons of LNG in the current year.
