Elton John Unveils New Broadway Adaptation of "The Devil Wears Prada" Despite Vision Loss
Legendary music maestro Elton John brought his undeniable talent to the stage once more, lending his musical brilliance to a stage adaptation of the beloved film "The Devil Wears Prada."
Though his vision has been impacted by a recent infection, John bravely attended the opening night gala of the musical at London’s Dominion Theatre on Sunday. He poignantly shared with the packed audience, "I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight. So it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight," showcasing his unwavering passion for the project.
This experience marks a difficult chapter for the 77-year-old icon. In September, John revealed to fans on Instagram that an infection had significantly reduced his vision in one eye. He reassured followers that, "I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye."
This adaptation of the 2006 film, known for its fierce fashion and witty dialogue, transforms the story into a vibrant musical experience. Vanessa Williams, a renowned Broadway star, sonically embodies the iconic Miranda Priestly, the powerful editor originally portrayed by Meryl Streep in the film incarnation.
Sunday’s gala, benefitting the Elton John AIDS Foundation, was a star-studded affair. Fashion royalty including designer Donatella Versace and former Vogue editor Anna Wintour, rumored to have inspired the Priestly character, were also in attendance. Wintour, known for her discerning eye and influential role in the fashion world, described the musical as "entertaining."
