Hong Kong launches panda sculpture tour as the city hopes the bear craze boosts tourism

Hong Kong Embraces "Panda Mania" to Boost Tourism

Hong Kong is experiencing a surge in panda fever, and it’s not just about cuddly cuteness. The city is strategically leveraging these beloved black-and-white bears to revitalize its tourism industry.

Starting this weekend, thousands of giant panda sculptures, crafted from recycled materials, will adorn iconic locations like the bustling Avenue of Stars. The artistic centerpiece, named PANDA GO! FEST HK, is the largest panda-themed exhibition the city has ever seen. This massive event coincides with the recent birth of two panda cubs at Ocean Park, making Hong Kong home to a total of six pandas – a truly remarkable animal ambassadors for the city.

"Ying Ying became the world’s oldest first-time panda mom when she gave birth to the cubs in August," the park announced.

These remarkable additions to the Ocean Park family, alongside two other pandas gifted by Beijing earlier this year, are expected to become major attractions. Visitors might even catch a glimpse of the cubs as early as February.

The excitement is already palpable. Another pair of pandas, An An and Ke Ke, who arrived in September, charmed the public with their relaxed demeanor during a recent media preview. "An An enjoyed eating bamboo in front of the cameras," one observer noted, while Ke Ke skillfully climbed a designated installation.

The panda phenomenon aligns with Hong Kong’s broader efforts to reclaim its position as a top tourism destination in Asia.

Pandas have long been China’s unofficial national mascot, and the country’s panda loan program with international zoos has been instrumental in its soft-power diplomacy.

"Housing six pandas presents a unique opportunity for Hong Kong to attract more tourists," noted tourism industry representatives. They acknowledge the significant costs associated with panda care but believe the potential benefits, including revenue from panda-themed merchandise and tours, outweigh the expenses.

Lawmakers have even coined the term "panda economy" to describes the expected economic boom.

To further capitalize on the panda craze, organizers invited renowned figures like music icon Pharrell Williams to design limited-edition panda sculptures. Most of these artistic creations will be auctioned online to support panda conservation efforts at Ocean Park.

This enthusiastic embrace of pandas marks a new chapter for Hong Kong, one that blends cultural diplomacy, wildlife conservation, and economic prosperity. The city is betting big on its cuddly ambassadors, and the world is watching with a curious, and undoubtedly charmed, gaze.
