Travelers Slam Airport Chaos: Long Lines, Taxi Woes, and Poor Service

Traveler Frustration Mounts as Tenerife Airport Faces Staffing Shortages

Tenerife South Airport, a popular gateway for tourists visiting the Canary Islands, is facing growing criticism over long wait times and inadequate transportation services. The island’s hotel association, Ashotel, has voiced serious concerns, citing chronic understaffing and outdated procedures that are marring the visitor experience.

"This situation is unacceptable in a world-class destination," Ashotel declared in a statement. The association points to the insufficient number of passport control officers, leading to lengthy queues and significant delays for travelers.

According to Ashotel, only two of the airport’s four passport control booths were operational in early November, manned by a mere two officers. "This situation is unacceptable in a world-class destination," Ashotel said in a statement. Worse yet, 30 biometric self-service machines installed in the airport remain unusable. These issues have been exacerbated since the UK’s departure from the European Union in 2021, leading to increased scrutiny of travelers.

The frustration continues outside the terminal. Ashotel reports that waiting times for taxis have reached an hour, leaving passengers impatient and stranded. To compound the problem, a local rule grants special taxi privileges to those from Granadilla de Abona, forcing taxis from other areas to leave the airport empty after dropping off passengers.

Ashotel has formally requested a meeting with the National Police to discuss solutions. They have also reached out to Anselmo Pestana, representative of the Canary Islands Government, seeking intervention.

With Tenerife South Airport handling over 12.3 million passengers in 2023, Ashotel emphasizes the urgency of the situation. They stress the need for immediate action to prevent further damage to the island’s reputation as a prime tourist destination.

This ongoing situation highlights the complexities of navigating international travel in a post-Brexit world, underscoring the importance of effective airport management and robust infrastructure to support a thriving tourism industry.
