Heartbreak in the Sky: Pilot Dies Rescuing Abandoned Dogs
A Maryland pilot’s last flight tragically ended in a fatal crash, leaving behind a community grieving the loss of a compassionate soul dedicated to saving animals. Seok Kim, 49, was piloting a small plane on November 24th, carrying three abandoned dogs from Maryland to Albany, New York, when disaster struck. The plane went down over the Catskill Mountains, claiming the lives of Kim and one of the dogs, popsicle-colored puppy Lisa. Two other dogs miraculously survived the crash.
Kim, who had longed to become a pilot since childhood, fulfilled his dream only four years ago. He quickly dedicated his newfound skills to a cause close to his heart – animal rescue. He volunteered with Pilots N Paws, an organization that transports vulnerable animals from shelters and disaster zones to loving homes.
“[He] did so much not only to save animals, but also for the community,” recalled colleague Penny Edwards, embodying the sentiment echoed by those who knew Kim. Edwards remembered Kim fondly, depicting him as “a wonderful man” who bravely delivered relief supplies to North Carolina residents impacted by Hurricane Helen earlier this year.
The accident has devastated Kim’s family who are working through their grief in the most poignant way. They decided to bury Lisa, who flew alongside Kim on his final journey, in the family’s backyard. Kim’s daughter Leah, 16, explained the heartbreaking reasoning behind their decision: “My father was so worried about Lisa that he risked his life to go on a plane,” she said. “We thought we should keep her close by. Bringing Lisa’s remains to our home could be a ‘memorial flight’ for him.”
Leah added, “I felt a sense of responsibility to continue the work my father started. Only Lisa is close by, giving peace to our hearts.”
Through this devastating loss, Kim’s legacy of compassion continues. His story reminds us of the extraordinary lengths individuals will go to help others, even those with four legs and a wagging tail.
