Russell Misses Podium, Hamilton Scores No Points After Pole Start

Mercedes Faces Disappointment in Qatar as Russell Finishes Fourth, Hamilton Out of Points

The Qatar Grand Prix delivered a frustrating result for Mercedes, with George Russell just managing a fourth-place finish despite starting from pole position. His teammate, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, endured a disastrous race, suffering a puncture and a penalty en route to a disappointing 12th-place finish.

While Russell started strong, his lead evaporated almost immediately as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and McLaren’s Lando Norris capitalized on the Brit’s sluggish start to overtake him in the first corner. Further trouble arrived on lap 24 during a pit stop, costing Russell precious time.

"It was a very special race because our pace was very strong all weekend, but we didn’t have that today," Russell admitted. "Overall my race was not good, I had a bad start, then a weak pace and finally I got a penalty at the end. We didn’t have the speed on the hard set and we weren’t fast enough compared to those around us."

Adding insult to injury, a five-second penalty for exceeding the delta time during a safety car period did little to change Russell’s fortunes.

Hamilton’s race spiraled downward almost from the start. After losing several positions at the beginning, the veteran driver’s chances worsened when a piece of debris from Alex Albon’s mirror punctured his tire, forcing an unscheduled pit stop.

"Overall, it was a very bad race for me, but that happens," Hamilton reflected. "It started with my slow start, which I was to blame and led to the penalty I gave at the pit.”

He compounded his woes by receiving a further pit lane speeding penalty, ultimately finishing outside the points in 12th position. This marks the end of a challenging season for Hamilton, but, as he poignantly stated, "Racing is like a roller coaster ride of emotions, I have had great races and bad races in my life. At the end of the day, it’s not about how you fall, it’s about how you get back up and let’s try again next week."
