Medan City Prepares for Rainy Season, Steps Up Dengue Fever Prevention

Indonesia Battles Rising Dengue Cases Ahead of Rainy Season

As the rainy season approaches, Indonesia is bracing for a surge in dengue fever cases. The nation has already recorded over 218,000 cases and 1,259 deaths this year, with North Sumatra among the hardest-hit provinces.

In response to this growing health threat, PT Takeda Innovative Medicines, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and local authorities, is rallying stakeholders to combat the disease. The "Joint Measures to Prevent DHF" event, held in Medan City from November 29 to December 1, underscores the urgency of a collaborative approach.

"Dengue is a huge burden, both for patients, their families, and the country," said Andreas Gutknecht, President Director of PT Takeda Innovative Medicines. "Every life that suffers is a tragedy that could have been prevented, and every case is a reminder that we must do more. We are all responsible, proactive and united in the fight against dengue."

Echoing this sentiment, Ina Agustina Isturini, Director of Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases at the Ministry of Health, emphasized the critical role of community involvement. "Dengue is still a big challenge in Indonesia. We still have a lot of homework to do," she stated, highlighting the government’s "National Strategy for the Treatment of Dengue 2021-2025"

Both factions stressed the importance of preventative measures, including the 3M Plus strategy:

  • Draining: Regularly clear stagnant water sources where mosquitoes breed.
  • Closing: Tightly seal water containers to prevent mosquito entry.
  • Burying: Dispose of discarded containers that can collect water.
  • Plus: Utilize additional preventive measures such as mosquito repellent, insecticide-treated nets, and apparel that minimizes skin exposure.

"We have now entered the rainy season," warned H Muhammad Faisal Hasrimy, Head of North Sumatra Regional Health Service, reporting a spike in cases within the province "The peak occurs between November and December. This greatly increases the risk of the dengue virus spreading."

This collaboration between health authorities, private partners, and communities underscores a growing sense of urgency to combat dengue fever. The aim is to raise awareness, implement preventive measures, and ultimately reach the WHO’s goal of zero dengue-related deaths by 2030.
