Indrajith Sukumaran Draws Inspiration From Mohanlal’s Iconic Portrayal of MGR

Acclaimed actor Indrajith Sukumaran, known for his versatile performances across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi cinema, recently shed light on his preparation for a career-defining role. Sukumaran portrayed the legendary MGR, a beloved figure in Tamil cinema and politics, in the web series "Queen." The series, based on the life of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, required Sukumaran to delve into the persona of one of cinema’s most iconic figures.

"We got into that series after analyzing old photos of MGR sir and books about him," Sukumaran shared in a recent interview with Movie World Media. He recalled director Gautham Menon’s guidance: "’MGR should not be reproduced in the same way; he should be presented in Indrajith’s way.’ Gautham also said that MGR should be emulated."

Interestingly, Sukumaran found inspiration in a previous portrayal of MGR – the legendary Mohanlal’s performance in the film "Iruvar."

“I have seen both of them long ago," Sukumaran explained. "I watched that movie again before joining this series. In that, Laletan did not imitate MGR in the same way. The character was presented in his own way. I followed the same in the Queen. It worked in a good way. It also received a lot of praise,” he added.

Sukumaran, who began his career as a child artist, has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in Indian cinema. His roles range from heroic protagonist to menacing antagonist, showcasing his impressive acting range. "Queen," with its nuanced portrayal of MGR, adds another layer of complexity to Sukumaran’s already impressive repertoire.
