Russia Responds to Syrian Rebel Advance with Air Strikes
Russia has intensified its military involvement in Syria following recent battlefield successes by opposition forces. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a London-based NGO, reported on Sunday that Russian airstrikes targeted towns and villages recently captured by Islamist-led rebel groups in the northwestern Idlib province and central Hama province. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov characterized the rebel gains as "attacks against Syrian sovereignty" and affirmed Russia’s stance in supporting the "restoration of the constitutional order" of the Syrian authorities.
