Trump Eyes Gaza Stop Amid Focus on Iran

Trump Calls for Immediate Gaza Truce, Eyes Hostage Release

Former President Trump is pushing for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, calling for a deal that includes the release of all remaining Israeli hostages. This comes H amid escalating tensions in the region following Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a close confidante of Trump, told Axios, "Trump is more determined than ever to free the hostages and supports a ceasefire that includes a cessation of hostilities. He wants to see it happen now.”

Graham, who recently visited the Middle East and met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, emphasized Trump’s urgency.

"The president-elect wants to reach an agreement on Gaza so he can focus on other issues, including normalizing Israel-Saudi relations and strengthening the regional coalition against Iran," the senator added.

Graham also stated that the potential successor administration, presumably referring to the Biden administration, would collaborate with Trump "during the transition period to free the guards and reach a ceasefire."

Hamas Signals Openness to Ceasefire

Hamas officials have recently communicated their willingness to consider a ceasefire. Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior Hamas figure, told Reuters earlier this week that the group exhibited "high flexibility" and remained "interested in reaching an agreement that ends the war in Gaza", while accusing Netanyahu of lacking interest in such a resolution.

Netanyahu, however, has stated that while he was "ready for a ceasefire at any time," it would only be possible if Israel could "liberate the hostages.” He stressed that a ceasefire would not signify the end of the conflict against Hamas.

Adding another layer of complexity, reports emerged that Hamas, through intermediaries like Egypt, Türkiye, and Qatar, has formally expressed its readiness for a ceasefire and a “serious prisoner exchange.”

Regional Tensions Remain High

The recent violence in Gaza unfolded against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the broader Middle East. Just days ago, Israel and Hezbollah, the pro-Palestinian group based in Lebanon, agreed to a US-France brokered ceasefire following clashes between the two. Though the ceasefire is now in effect, both sides are engaged in finger-pointing and accusations of violation.

The gravity of the situation in Gaza, with over 44,000 Palestinian casualties since the conflict escalated over a year ago, highlights the urgency for a peaceful resolution. The fate of the roughly 100 Israeli hostages held captive by Hamas weighs heavily on the minds of both Israelis and the international community. As diplomatic efforts continue, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for a swift end to the bloodshed and a return to normalcy.
