Nature Book Award Goes to ‘Ode to Nature’ by Caspar Janssen and Margot Holtman

"The Nature of the Beast" Wins Coveted Nature Book Prize

Dutch authors Caspar Janssen and Margot Holtman have been crowned the winners of the inaugural Nature Book Award, formerly known as the Jan Wolkers Prize. Their book, "The Nature of the Beast: The Brook Lamprey, the Golden Oriole, and 98 Other Companions," captivated the jury with its intimate portraits of often overlooked creatures.

The December 1st ceremony, presided over by the Dutch national broadcasting platform, NPO Radio 1’s "Early Birds" program, celebrated a book described as a mini-encyclopedia for animal lovers. The beautifully illustrated text showcases the symbiotic connections between various species and the Dutch landscape.

"A brilliant example of nature in words and images." Judges praised the book for its diversity. "Think of this book as a guidebook, a reference point, an ode, a poetic window into our natural world, all in one", they wrote.

Janssen, a writer and journalist, journeys through the Dutch landscape, spotlighting creatures many might overlook. From the slinking brook lamprey to the vibrant golden oriole, he captures their essence with prose, while Holtman’s photographs offer a visual feast, enriching the reading experience.

This "ode to nature and those who cherish it," dives deep into ecosystems, emphasizing the interconnectedness of all living things. The book, as the jury noted, takes the reader beyond simple identification, pushing us to understand how even the smallest creatures play vital roles in shaping the natural world around us.

The clutch of winners will receive a cash prize of $5,400 (5,000 Euros), along with a unique painting by artist OC Hooymijer – a fitting tribute to their work celebrating the蟆munity of life.

The Nature Book Prize follows in the tradition of the Jan Wolkers Prize, upholding a longstanding commitment to celebrating the natural world through words and images."><img src="https://cdn.nos.nl/image/2024/12/01/1164156/1024x576a.jpg”wska offset-left: 100px;>
