A Serene Escape Awaits at Castillo de Arena, Mexico
Nestled just blocks from the sun-kissed shores of Puerto Escondido’s Punta Zicatela beach, Castillo de Arena emerges as a sanctuary for those seeking tranquility and connection with nature. This new boutique hotel is the brainchild of renowned Mexico City-based architect Alberto Kalach, of Taller de Arquitectura X, and designer Susana Pantoja, who have collaborated to create a space that embodies the essence of modern Mexican minimalism.
The hotel’s architecture evokes a sense of calm and openness. Three brick towers, each rising three stories tall, embrace a central courtyard. This outdoor haven celebrates the surrounding landscape, preserving two magnificent existing trees and featuring reclaimed stone paving and tranquil water features. The gentle symphony of flowing water creates a soothing ambiance for guests seeking respite from the world.

A communal pool, adorned with a shimmering mosaic of tiles, beckons guests to unwind and refresh. The constantly shifting patterns of light and shadow dancing across the pool’s surface create a mesmerizing dance of reflections throughout the day.
While Castillo de Arena doesn’t include its own restaurant, it does house Los Zanates, a welcoming cafe-bar open to both guests and the public. ## Interview: Finding Serenity in the Sands: A Conversation with the Architect Behind castillo de Arena
**World Today News** sits down with renowned architect Alberto Kalach, the visionary behind the newly opened Castillo de Arena, a boutique hotel nestled in puerto Escondido, Mexico, to discuss the design ideology, the inspiration behind the space, and the unique experience it offers to guests.
**WTN:** Alberto, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. Castillo de Arena has been generating quite a buzz. What was the initial vision behind this project?
**AK:** The idea was to create a sanctuary, a place where people could truly disconnect from the noise of daily life and reconnect with nature. We envisioned a space that embraced the natural beauty of Punta Zicatela while providing a sense of calm and tranquility.
**WTN:** The architecture of Castillo de arena is striking.the three brick towers, the central courtyard… what inspired this design? What kind of experience were you hoping to create?
**AK:** We drew inspiration from the conventional Mexican courtyard homes, which prioritize communal spaces and a connection to the outdoors. We wanted to create a sense of intimacy and serenity, so we deliberately chose materials like reclaimed stone and wood to evoke a sense of warmth and history. The courtyard, with its existing trees and water features, acts as a central hub for relaxation and social interaction.
**WTN:** The interior design seems to reflect the minimalist aesthetic of the architecture. Can you tell us more about your choices of materials and furniture?
**AK:** We wanted the interiors to feel light and airy, so we used a lot of natural light and a muted color palette. We also incorporated local textiles and artisan-made furniture to add a touch of warmth and personality. Our goal was to create a space that felt both luxurious and inviting.
**WTN:** Castillo de Arena doesn’t have its own resturant but does feature Los Zanates, a cafe-bar open to the public. What role does this space play within the hotel’s overall concept?
**AK:** Los Zanates is meant to be a welcoming gathering place for both guests and locals. We wanted to create a space where people could connect over a cup of coffee or a cocktail, share stories, and experience the vibrant community spirit of Puerto Escondido.
**WTN:** What do you hope guests will take away from their experience at Castillo de Arena?
**AK:** We hope guests will leave feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and inspired. we want Castillo de Arena to be a place where people can reconnect with themselves, with nature, and with each other.
**WTN:** Thank you for your insights, Alberto. Castillo de Arena certainly seems to be a unique and special place.
**AK:** Thank you for having me. I hope everyone gets the chance to experience the magic of Puerto Escondido and Castillo de Arena.
