The Maryborough meteorite, thought to have originated from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, likely "booted" out of orbit by a massive celestial collision before landing on Earth thousands, or possibly millions, of years ago.

Scientists estimate the meteorite’s arrival on Earth to have occurred between perhaps 100 and 1,000 years ago. Interestingly, historical meteor sightings documented between 1889 and 1951 could be linked to this very rock’s descent.

Although gold has long been revered as a symbol of wealth, the Maryborough meteorite represents a treasure far beyond monetary value.

"This meteorite is an amazing find, because thousands of gold nuggets have been found in Victoria, but only a small number of meteorites have been found," Henry noted.

This discovery harkens back to a similar tale from 2018, where a space rock remained unidentified for 80 years before being classified as a meteorite.
