RFK Jr.’s Plan to End Fluoridation in US Drinking Water Could Unleash a Cavity Crisis
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a potential future leader in US health policy, has announced a controversial plan to ban the addition of fluoride to public water supplies. Kennedy, who was once nominated for a prominent HHS position, believes fluoride, a mineral found naturally in the environment, poses a significant health risk.
However, experts overwhelmingly refute these claims, emphasizing that fluoridation has dramatically improved dental health for millions of Americans, particularly those without access to regular dental care.
A stark warning comes from Juneau, Alaska, a city that voted to remove fluoride from its water supply in 2007. This decision, fueled by anxieties similar to those Kennedy promotes, is considered a case study in the potential consequences of removing fluoride.
A 2018 study published in BMC Oral Health analyzed dental records of Juneau adolescents who accessed Medicaid dental care both before and after the fluoride ban. Researchers found a significantly higher number of cavity-related dental procedures in the post-ban group compared to their counterparts who received fluoridated water. Teens 18 and under were 25% more likely to require these procedures.
Most alarmingly, children born after the fluoride ban experienced the most severe consequences. They not only required more tooth decay treatments but also faced higher costs associated with these interventions.
The study also revealed a staggering 73% increase in dental care costs for adolescents following the fluoride ban, even after accounting for inflation. This paints a clear picture: removing fluoride fueled a surge in tooth decay, leading to a significant financial burden on the community.
Today, approximately 75% of the US population benefits from fluoridated water, a public health measure credited by the CDC with reducing tooth decay by an estimated 25%. The CDC rates fluoridation as one of the top ten greatest public health achievements of the 20th century.
Kennedy’s stance on fluoride, labeling it "dangerous industrial waste" associated with IQ loss and cancer, echoes those expressed by other critics. However, scientific evidence to support these claims is either lacking or significantly overstated.
While high doses of fluoride can indeed lead to dental fluorosis, a condition affecting enamel development in young children, this typically occurs at levels three times the recommended amount for public water. Skeletal fluorosis, a more serious condition, is exceedingly rare.
The purported link between fluoride and lowered IQs in children is even more contested. A 2024 review conducted by the US National Toxicology Program found a correlation between high fluoride levels and potential cognitive decline in children.
However, this study focused on fluoride levels twice the recommended levels in the US, and failed to establish a definitive link at standard concentrations. Notably, this review faced two rounds of failed scientific review and bypassed independent scrutiny in its most recent iteration.
The evidence is simply insufficient to justify a nationwide ban on fluoridation.

## “A Cavity Catastrophe?: Discussing RFK Jr.’s fluoride Stance”
**World Today News Exclusive Interview with Dr. Anya Sharma, DDS, MPH**
**World Today News:** Robert F. Kennedy Jr.,a prominent figure in US politics, recently announced his intention to ban fluoride in public water supplies if elected to office. This stance has sparked heated debate. Here with us today is Dr. Anya Sharma, a renowned dentist and public health expert, to offer her perspective on Kennedy’s plan and its potential ramifications. Dr. Sharma, thank you for joining us.
**Dr. Sharma:** It’s my pleasure.
**World Today News:** Dr. Sharma, what are your initial thoughts on Kennedy’s proposal to eliminate water fluoridation?
**Dr.Sharma:** I’m deeply concerned. Water fluoridation is one of the most effective public health interventions in history, demonstrably reducing tooth decay, especially amongst vulnerable populations. Decades of scientific research have consistently proven its safety and efficacy. To suddenly halt this practise would be a significant step backwards for oral health, potentially leading to an alarming rise in cavities and associated health complications.
**World Today News:** Kennedy argues that fluoride is a toxic chemical and poses health risks. How do you respond to these claims?
**Dr.Sharma:** It’s crucial to understand that the fluoride added to water is in a very low concentration, carefully calibrated to be safe and effective. It’s the same fluoride found naturally in many foods and water sources. While high doses of fluoride can be harmful, the amount used in water fluoridation is far below any toxic threshold.
**World Today News:** What are the potential consequences of eliminating fluoride from drinking water, particularly for disadvantaged communities?
**Dr. Sharma:** The impact would be acutely felt by low-income families who frequently enough lack access to proper dental care and rely heavily on fluoridated water for cavity prevention. We could see a surge in dental problems, leading to increased pain, suffering, and costly treatments. Children would be particularly vulnerable, facing a higher risk of disfiguring tooth decay and developmental delays.
**World Today News:** Do you believe ther are alternative solutions to address concerns about fluoride while preserving its benefits?
**Dr.Sharma:** Absolutely. We should focus on providing clear, accurate information to the public about the safety and benefits of water fluoridation. Additionally, we need to improve access to dental care for all, irrespective of socioeconomic status.
**World Today News:** what message would you like to send to readers who are unsure about fluoride?
**Dr. Sharma:** Trust the science. Water fluoridation is a safe, effective, and cost-efficient way to protect oral health. Don’t let misinformation undermine a proven public health success story. We must prioritize the well-being of our communities, especially the most vulnerable, and ensure access to the essential health benefits that fluoridated water provides.
