The Washington, D.C. area buzzed with excitement as the Fédération of Kerala Associations in North America (Fokana) held its vibrant regional inauguration.
Marking a significant milestone for the organization, this event brought together a diverse community, united by shared heritage and a commitment to strengthening bonds. The gathering kicked off with a heartfelt prayer song by Parvati Sudhir, Executive Committee Member of the Fokana Women’s Forum.
Sajimon Anthony, Fokana President, illuminated the occasion, "The world is a family," he declared, embodying the ethos of Vasudaiva Kudumbakam. "Complete development and respect for all living creatures, moving together as one – that is the essence of our mission."
Mr. Anthony underscored the importance of service, stating, "The word that connects each of us is ‘seva,’ service. Where there is culture and service, there is respect for others." He then unveiled ambitious plans for Fokana, including collaborations with Rajagiri Medical Card, Pala Medicity, and Believers Hospital Thiruvalla. Recognizing the needs of its members, Fokana will also launch a dedicated club card and a new health clinic for visitors and those without insurance.
The event showcased Fokana’s commitment to empowering its community, as exemplified by its partnership with Toast Masters to offer valuable skills-building classes.
Ben Paul, Regional Vice President, outlined Fokana’s future endeavors in the Washington, D.C. area over the next two years. Sreekumar Unnithan, General Secretary, emphasized the unwavering spirit of the Fokana community, declaring that those attempting to undermine the organization for personal gain would be held accountable.
Vice President Vipin Raj expressed his deep connection to Fokana and pledged continued support, stating, "I will always be with Fokana.” He fondly reminisced, “Washington has always been the roots of Phokana, and when Phokana started, its main center was Washington DC, and even today, nothing has changed.”
In a heartwarming tribute, founding leader Thomas Thomas commended President Anthony for revitalizing Fokana and extended his congratulations to the Washington D.C. committee for organizing a reunion-style event. National Committee Member Shibu Samuel and Inspector Stanley Ibidnical extended warm greetings, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
The program also celebrated the extraordinary contributions of individuals who exemplify Fokana’s values. Thomas Withayat was honored for his remarkable 191 blood donations, while longtime Fokana News leader, Sreekumar Unnithan, received recognition for his dedicated service.
The event concluded with an honoring ceremony acknowledging early Fokana pioneers Varghese Scaria, Thomas Thomas, and James Joseph.
