At the beginning of last October, the Municipality of Guatemala together with its counterpart in Mixco and the company “CableVía” carried out the approval of the first concession for the implementation of the ambitious public transportation project, “Aermetro”.
This is a project with which the communes seek to promote and improve urban mobility through public transportation by aerial cable, 100% electric, the first of its kind in all of Central America.
The capital municipality indicated that, after approving the concession, the companies involved are already informed to continue with the study phase.
According to authorities, the Aerometro would begin operating in 2028. The price of the ticket will be Q4.00 for line 1 and Q6.00 for line 2, giving a total of Q10.00 for the complete route.
The first phase would begin in the Molino de las Flores neighborhood, in zone 3 of Mixco; It would cross the Roosevelt Road and El Trébol, ending in Plaza España, zone 9 of Guatemala City.
The Aerometro transportation system will consist of more than 450 cabins between both lines; each with capacity for 12 people seated.
The stations will have various services, such as: public toilets, food sales, specific places for bicycles and wheelchairs and free internet signal.

## Guatemala’s Aspiring Aerometro Project: Transforming Urban Transit wiht Aerial Cable Cars
Guatemala City is set to revolutionize its public transportation system with the groundbreaking “Aerometro” project. This ambitious initiative, the first of its kind in Central America, will utilize electric aerial cable cars to provide a modern and efficient solution to the city’s growing traffic woes. Backed by the Municipalities of Guatemala City and Mixco, along with “CableVía” company, the project is slated to become operational by 2028.
To delve deeper into the potential impact and feasibility of this innovative project, we spoke with two experts: **Dr. Maria Gonzalez**, a renowned urban planner and professor at the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, and **Engineer Carlos Ramirez**, a leading infrastructure specialist with extensive experience in cable car systems.
### Addressing Guatemala City’s Transportation Challenges
**World Today News:** Dr. Gonzalez, Guatemala City faces serious traffic congestion issues. How do you see the Aerometro addressing this challenge?
**Dr. Maria gonzalez:** The Aerometro has the potential to substantially improve urban mobility in Guatemala City. By bypassing ground-level traffic, it offers a faster and more reliable mode of transport, especially during peak hours. This can cut down commute times, reduce fuel consumption, and ultimately contribute to a less congested and more sustainable city.
**World Today News:** Engineer Ramirez, what are some of the unique benefits of using aerial cable car systems for urban transportation compared to traditional methods?
**Engineer Carlos Ramirez:** Cable car systems are highly efficient and environmentally pleasant. They require less land for construction, have a smaller carbon footprint, and generate minimal noise pollution. Moreover, they can navigate challenging terrains, making them suitable for densely populated areas like Guatemala City.
### Project Details and Public Response
**World Today News:** Can you elaborate on the proposed routes and services offered by the Aerometro?
**Engineer Carlos Ramirez:** The first phase will connect the Molino de las Flores neighborhood in Mixco to Plaza España in Guatemala City, with designated stops along the way. The system will comprise over 450 cabins, each accommodating 12 seated passengers.
**World Today News:** The projected cost of Q4.00 per ride for line 1 and Q6.00 for line 2 seems relatively affordable. What’s been the public’s reaction to the proposed fares?
**Dr. Maria Gonzalez:** There’s been a largely positive response from the public, recognizing the affordability and convenience of the Aerometro. This system offers a viable option to overcrowded buses and expensive taxis, particularly for low-income communities.
### Looking Towards the Future
**World Today News:** What are your predictions for the long-term impact of the Aerometro on Guatemala City?
**Dr. Maria Gonzalez:** I believe the Aerometro will become a significant driver of urban renewal, stimulating economic advancement and improving the quality of life for residents.
“Its success could encourage further investment in sustainable infrastructure and inspire other cities in the region to explore similar innovative solutions.”
**World Today News:** Engineer Ramirez, are there any other cable car projects being developed in Central America that you can share insight on?
**Engineer Carlos Ramirez:** The success of the Aerometro in Guatemala City could very well pave the way for similar projects in other Central American countries grappling with urban mobility challenges. We’re already seeing increasing interest in this technology throughout the region.
**Key Takeaways**: The Aerometro project promises to be a game-changer for Guatemala City, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional transportation. While challenges undoubtedly exist, the potential benefits for urban mobility, economic development, and environmental sustainability are undeniable.
