Former Mets General Manager Speaks Out, Reflects on Inappropriate Conduct
Former New York Mets general manager Jared Porter spoke publicly for the first time since his abrupt dismissal nearly four years ago, admitting his actions were “inappropriate” and acknowledging the New York Mets made the right decision in firing him.
Porter’s firing in January 2021 came swiftly on the heels of an ESPN report detailing his sending of dozens of unsolicited and explicit text messages to a female journalist while he was with the Chicago Cubs in 2016.
In a recent appearance on the podcast "Baseball Isn’t Boring," Porter took ownership of his actions, stating, “It was an inappropriate relationship for a lot of reasons. I put myself in that situation. I made the decision to send the text message that I sent. And I certainly shouldn’t have done it.”
The journalist, who received the unwanted messages, opted to leave her profession in part due to the harassment she faced. According to the ESPN report, Porter’s messages, which included lewd and explicit images, went unanswered for weeks at times.
In the aftermath of his firing, Porter revealed he sought help, spending a week at an Arizona behavioral healthcare facility called The Meadows before transitioning to an outpatient program for eight weeks. "It took a major incident like this to kind of wake me up," he admitted.
Porter has continued seeking support through therapy and retreats with his wife.
His time with the Mets proved to be short-lived, lasting a mere 37 days.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced much of the team’s business to be conducted virtually, meaning Porter never had the opportunity to physically work in his Citi Field office or even meet Mets owner Steve Cohen in person.
“They had to make the best decision for the New York Mets when the article came out, and I knew they would,” Porter acknowledged. “I hold zero ill will toward them whatsoever. I do think they made the best decision for the Mets. It’s unfortunate that I put myself and put them in that situation.”
