Beloved Local Businessman and Funeral Director, Con Gilsenan, Laid to Rest
Mullingar, Ireland – Con Gilsenan, a pillar of the Mullingar community known for his kindness, integrity, and decades-long service to the town, passed away peacefully at home on November 20th, at the age of [insert age]. His passing was met with an outpouring of grief and remembrance, reflected in the large crowds present at both his removal and funeral service on Monday.
Fr. Phil Gaffney, who presided over the service at the Cathedral of Christ the King, described Con as "a man of decency and integrity who touched the lives of so many people."
Gilsenan was a familiar face for nearly 40 years, running the popular Dominick Street pub, Con’s. He later established a successful undertaking business and funeral home, offering comfort and support to grieving families throughout the region.
"He’d be delighted looking down at the crowd here today," Fr. Gaffney said, lamenting the loss of Gilsenan’s presence at the cathedral, where he often walked the aisle with priests during funeral processions. "So many of his great friends and colleagues gathering in this beautiful cathedral which he was so fond of, where he felt at home."
Fr. Gaffney recalled Gilsenan’s pride in his hometown of ‘The Float’, Multyfarnham, and his deep commitment to Mullingar: "[He always said] for him, place was always about openness, welcoming and belonging," Fr. Gaffney shared, "Con had been determined always to leave the world a better place."
Revered Canon Alastair Graham echoed this sentiment, offering these words of comfort during this time of mourning:
“‘Well done my true and faithful servant.’ It is easy to imagine that Con Gilsenan will be greeted with those words when he meets his Heavenly Father. News of Con’s untimely death was met with a deep sadness by the countless number of people who had the pleasure and privilege of knowing him. No matter what company Con was in, his beautiful humanity shone brightly bringing compassion, kindness, gentleness, patience and above all love which bonded him so inspiringly to everyone no matter what their station in life."
"[Con] touched all our lives. Con ‘set his mind on things above’ and was an ambassador for ‘the new humanity’ which came as a result of Christ’s Resurrection. Con was a true gentleman and he will be much missed by us all.”
Gilsenan leaves behind a legacy of warmth, compassion, and service to his community. He is survived by his wife Joan, son Conor, daughter-in-law Megan, siblings Liam, Mary, Ber, Frank, and Thérèse, and a large circle of relatives and friends.
His interment took place at Whitehall Cemetery following Requiem Mass. Con Gilsenan will be deeply missed, but his spirit of generosity and kindness will endure in the memories of those he positively touched.
