At the beginning of last October, the Municipality of Guatemala together with its counterpart in Mixco and the company “CableVía” carried out the approval of the first concession for the implementation of the ambitious public transportation project, “Aermetro”.
This is a project with which the communes seek to promote and improve urban mobility through public transportation by aerial cable, 100% electric, the first of its kind in all of Central America.
The capital municipality indicated that, after approving the concession, the companies involved are already informed to continue with the study phase.
According to authorities, the Aerometro would begin operating in 2028. The price of the ticket will be Q4.00 for line 1 and Q6.00 for line 2, giving a total of Q10.00 for the complete route.
The first phase would begin in the Molino de las Flores neighborhood, in zone 3 of Mixco; It would cross the Roosevelt Road and El Trébol, ending in Plaza España, zone 9 of Guatemala City.
The Aerometro transportation system will consist of more than 450 cabins between both lines; each with capacity for 12 people seated.
The stations will have various services, such as: public toilets, food sales, specific places for bicycles and wheelchairs and free internet signal.

## Guatemala’s “AeroMetro”: A Sky-High Solution to Urban Mobility?
Guatemala City is set to revolutionize its public transportation system with the groundbreaking “AeroMetro” project. This ambitious initiative will see Guatemala become the first Central American nation to implement a fully electric, aerial cable car network for urban transit. Scheduled to begin operation in 2028, AeroMetro promises to ease congestion and offer a modern, efficient choice to customary bus routes. Today, we delve deeper into this innovative project with two leading experts in urban planning and sustainable transportation: Dr. Maria Alvarez, Professor of Urban Planning at Universidad Rafael Landivar, and Juan Carlos Rodriguez, CEO of GreenMobility Solutions, a firm specializing in sustainable urban mobility projects.
**the AeroMetro Project: A Vision for the Future**
Dr. Alvarez, can you shed some light on the key features of the AeroMetro project and its potential impact on Guatemala City?
**Dr. Alvarez:** “AeroMetro is a truly transformative project. It will consist of two lines, spanning over 10 kilometers and connecting key areas like Mixco and Guatemala City.with over 450 cabins, each capable of carrying 12 passengers, it’s designed to significantly improve travel times and accessibility. The project also prioritizes sustainability with its 100% electric cabins and the incorporation of green spaces at stations.”
**Addressing Guatemala’s Transportation Challenges**
Guatemala City grapples with notable traffic congestion and air pollution. How does AeroMetro aim to address these challenges?
**Juan Carlos Rodriguez:** “Currently, Guatemala City relies heavily on buses, which contribute to traffic jams and emissions. AeroMetro’s aerial infrastructure bypasses road traffic, offering a faster, more reliable commute. Its electric-powered cabins will significantly reduce emissions, contributing to a cleaner and healthier urban habitat.”
**Technological Advancements and Accessibility:**
AeroMetro boasts features like public restrooms, food vendors, and wheelchair accessibility at stations. How does this project leverage technological advancements to enhance user experience?
**Dr. Alvarez:** “The stations are designed as modern, integrated hubs. Free wi-Fi access will be provided, allowing commuters to stay connected. The cabins are air-conditioned and offer panoramic views, making the journey itself a positive experience.” **
**The Future of Urban Mobility in Guatemala**
What are your predictions for the long-term impact of AeroMetro on Guatemala’s urban landscape and its potential for replication in other Central American cities?
**Juan Carlos Rodriguez:**
“AeroMetro has the potential to be a game-changer for Guatemala City. It sets a precedent for sustainable urban mobility solutions in the region. We anticipate that its success will inspire similar projects in other Central american cities facing similar transportation challenges.”
**Conclusion:**
AeroMetro embodies a bold vision for Guatemala’s future, offering a glimpse into a more sustainable, efficient, and connected urban landscape. As the project moves forward, its success will depend on continued community engagement and collaboration between government agencies, private partners, and citizens.
