Koumoundourou launched a fierce attack against State MP Evangelos Apostolakis, after the declaration of withdrawal from SYRIZA-PS and the decision to make him independent without handing over his parliamentary seat. SYRIZA-PS characterizes the decision of Evangelos Apostolakis as pre-written and identifies his attitude as a “shameful apostasy”.
SYRIZA-PS points out that by leaving without handing over the seat, he insults the party that honored him by placing him on the State Ballot, the voters of SYRIZA-PS and the choice of SYRIZA-PS members, as expressed recently in the presidential elections.
It is noteworthy that according to information from the staff of Alexis Tsipras, the former prime minister and former president of SYRIZA had a telephone conversation with Evangelos Apostolakis on the initiative of the deputy in the previous days. Alexis Tsipras, as his interlocutors point out, conveyed his position to him in an absolute manner that “especially an appointed member of parliament when he disagrees with the party that elected him resigns, leaving the seat that neither politically nor morally belongs to him. He obviously listened to other people’s advice!
It was to be expected that Koumoundourou would launch heavy fire against Evangelos Apostolakis, in the event that he left and kept his seat, as he was not elected with a cross in 2023 but was placed on the State ballot by the decision of the then president of the party, Alexis Tsipras.
Thus, Koumoundourou calls on the SYRIZA State Member of Parliament – PS Evangelos Apostolakis, retired admiral, honorary Chief of GEETHA to hand over the seat even at the last moment and adds that otherwise from now on he will bear “the mark of apostasy, trespass and offending the popular verdict and will, as well as serving the aims of the government Mitsotakis and the entanglement, who are particularly worried by the restart and strengthening of SYRIZA-PS”.
Shortly after the declaration of independence by Evangelos Apostolakis, on the evening of November 28, SYRIZA-PS issued the following statement:
“The prescribed decision of Evangelos Apostolakis ends today with his shameful apostasy. He didn’t think about the Party that honored him by placing him on the State Ballot, nor the voters of SYRIZA-PS.
And he insults the choice of SYRIZA-PS members, as he recently expressed in the presidential elections.
From now on, it will bear the mark of apostasy, trampling and insulting the popular verdict and will, as well as serving the Mitsotakis government’s aims and the entanglement, which are particularly worrying from the relaunch and strengthening of SYRIZA-PS.
He must, even at the last moment, hand over the seat that does not belong to him, especially since SYRIZA-PS placed him on the State Ballot. Otherwise, the Greek people will send him to the basket of political history. And no one is going to save him there.”

## Political Earthquake in Greece: Apostolakis’ Exit Shakes SYRIZA
**World Today News:** With tensions running high in Greece’s political landscape, the decision of State MP Evangelos Apostolakis to withdraw from SYRIZA-PS and remain in parliament as an autonomous has sent shockwaves through the party. We sat down with **Dr.Sophia kougioumtzidou, Professor of Political Science at The University of Athens**, to unpack the ramifications of this move.
**World Today News:** Dr. Kougioumtzidou, Apostolakis’ decision has been met with outrage by SYRIZA-PS. What are the key implications of this exit, and why is the party so incensed?
**dr. Kougioumtzidou:** This is a significant blow to SYRIZA-PS for several reasons. Firstly, Apostolakis’ departure weakens the party’s parliamentary presence at a crucial time. Every seat counts in the current Greek political arena, and losing one, especially under these circumstances, is a setback. Secondly, the manner of his exit is perceived as disrespectful.
SYRIZA-PS argues that by refusing to relinquish his seat, Apostolakis is disregarding the trust placed in him by the party, its members, and the voters who cast ballots for him. This perception of betrayal could further erode public trust in the party and its leadership.
**World Today News:** Syriza-PS has labelled Apostolakis’s move a “pre-written decision” and a “shameful apostasy”. do you think there are deeper motives behind his actions?
**Dr. Kougioumtzidou:** It’s essential to avoid speculation at this stage. However, the timing of Apostolakis’ decision, coming shortly after the SYRIZA-PS performed poorly in the recent presidential elections, suggests potential dissatisfaction with the party’s direction.
Apostolakis’ individual political aspirations and potential alignment with other factions within the Greek political spectrum could also be contributing factors. We need to see how his decision plays out and gain further insight before drawing definitive conclusions about his motivations.
**World Today news:** What dose this mean for the future of SYRIZA-PS? Can the party recover from this setback?
**Dr. Kougioumtzidou:** This is undoubtedly a challenge for SYRIZA-PS. The party needs to address the concerns that led to Apostolakis’ departure and demonstrate to its members and voters that it is indeed capable of addressing these issues and moving forward cohesively.
This situation also presents an possibility for SYRIZA-PS to reflect on its internal dynamics and policies, potentially leading to necessary adjustments to rebuild trust and recalibrate its political strategy. The party’s resilience and ability to adapt will determine its long-term viability.
**World Today news:** What are your thoughts on the reported phone call between Alexis Tsipras and Evangelos Apostolakis prior to the latter’s decision?
**Dr. Kougioumtzidou:** This phone call adds another layer of intrigue to the situation. Its content is unkown, and much speculation surrounds it.
It’s possible that Tsipras attempted to persuade Apostolakis to stay within the party or understand his reasoning for leaving. The outcome of this conversation is crucial to understanding the internal dynamics within SYRIZA-PS and the potential for reconciliation or further fragmentation.
**World Today News:** Dr. Kougioumtzidou, thank you for your insights and expert analysis of this unfolding political drama.
