When you look up, in the middle of Parque del Oeste, some flashes of neon lights catch your attention. It is the Lantern Festival, which transforms part of the Malaga park for a few months into Chinese Christmas. From this Saturday, February 30 to February 15, the show ‘The light of a unique millennial journey’ offers an immersive cultural experience inspired by the ancient and traditional Chinese Lantern Festival, also known as the ‘Spring Festival’
During their stay in this park in the capital they will offer passes at 6:00 p.m., 7:15 p.m., 8:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m., although on December 24, 31 and January 5, only the first pass of the day will be held, as reported this Thursday the organization during the press visit to this festival. According to reports, there are a total of 600 handmade lanterns, more than 4,000 points of light and almost fifty figures of light among trees, mushrooms, dragons, panda bears, butterflies and even a couple of Spanish dancers. Although the press was not able to check all the facilities since during the presentation, the organization only gave way to the first street of the venue and with some power outages during the tour.
Ticket prices range between 15 and 20 euros, although there are some special discounts. The passes, on sale from the event website (www.festivaldelaslinternas.es), have 10% for residents/born in Malaga, groups of more than 20 and people with functional diversity. Additionally, on these Black Friday sale days, you can enjoy 20% more (until Monday).
It will be this Saturday when the Lantern Festival opens its doors to the public after 8:00 p.m. Although some 4,000 residents of the nearby area (Santa Paula, Parque Mediterráneo and La Paz) have already been able to enjoy these days. Although there are many neighbors who have launched protests against the privatization of public space, even before the press visit this Thursday, one of the neighbors came to complain that “they cut off part of the park to be able to walk and do their work.” daily life in it” and several graffiti on the panels that delimit the enclosure criticize this initiative.
For this same Saturday of the premiere of the Lantern Festival, it is expected that they will gather again to protest the installation of this festival within the Parque del Oeste. The rest of the space that remains free remains open during the usual hours in these months, starting on February 15, the date on which the entire installation is removed from the premises.
This total premiere in the city is the result of the alliance between Ximenez Group, a leader in artistic lighting, and Lantern Group, one of the most important companies in China in the organization of lantern festivals. They also have the support of the Malaga City Council.
