For the last four seasons, “Šiauliai”, for which Dāvis Ikaunieks played this season, was led by the Lithuanian specialist Mindaugas Čeps, and under the leadership of the team Šiauliai won the third place in the Lithuanian championship – last season. This season, “Šiauliai” was in seventh place in the strongest Lithuanian league.
In a conversation with “15min.lt”, the director of the Šiauliai football academy, Davies Kanchelskis, revealed that negotiations are currently underway with Kazakevič.
“We have had several discussions, we also met. I can say that there are several candidates and one of them is Danish,” said Kanchelskis, adding that the club would like to announce a head coach in the coming weeks we are ahead.
Kazakevičs became the coach of the Latvian national team at the beginning of 2020, but left the position at the end of 2023. With Kazakevic at the helm, the national team played in the 2020 World Cup qualifiers, UEFA Nations League and Championship selection European 2024. Under his leadership, the national team won 11 victories, drew 12 times and lost 18 in 41 matches.
He has been working as a coach and head coach’s assistant in children’s and youth football since 1996. At this level, he was managing “Viola” / secondary high school, “Viola”, Youth Football Center “Jelgava” and Zemgale regional youth national teams.
In adult football, Kazakevičs started coaching in 2001 at the helm of “Viola”, leading the team to victory in the second league, but from 2004 to 2012 he was the captain of “Jelgava”, the leading the team to the Latvian Super League and helping it win the Latvian Cup in 2010. At the same time, he was the head coach of the regional team Zemgale and the first U-20 team in the league in Latvia.
From 2013 to 2019, he was the head coach of the Latvian U-21 and U-23 teams until January 2020, when he was approved as the coach of the national team. In 2016, Latvian U-21 football players won the Baltic Cup under his leadership.
