EU states disagree on wording on nuclear power

Nuclear power has been a controversial topic for years

Hungary’s Economy Minister Marton Nagy said that for years there has been no agreement on whether nuclear power should be classified as clean technology or not. The question would also be whether EU funds should be used to promote this technology. In the end, a declaration was adopted as the so-called presidential conclusion without the consent of Germany and Austria. The exact text was not initially published.

France in particular is a supporter of nuclear power. Germany’s neighbor sees this as a key technology for a CO2-free economy.

The issue of competitiveness is currently at the top of the EU’s priority list. Many politicians and business representatives fear that Europe will be left behind economically by competitors from the USA and Asia. The automotive industry in particular is under pressure, but there is also bad news from other areas such as the steel industry. The Federal Ministry of Economics announced that bureaucracy must be reduced, access to financing improved and energy prices reduced./mjm/DP/men
