Anyone suffering from fatigue suddenly feels exhausted. You can’t get rid of exhaustion even by resting and sleeping. Treating fatigue is not easy: There is currently no approved medication for it. According to the Charité in Berlin, fatigue is the most common symptom of Long Covid.
An interdisciplinary fatigue clinic has now opened at Ulm University Hospital – as a central contact point for people with post-infectious fatigue. The Institute for General Medicine works in the Long/Post-Covid Baden-Württemberg competence network Ulm with the institutes for general medicine at the university hospitals in Freiburg, Heidelberg, Tübingen and regional partners. The aim is to build a nationwide care network for people with long/post-Covid.
With the newly structured interdisciplinary post-infectious fatigue clinic, the Ulm University Hospital wants to offer a central contact point for people with long-lasting symptoms after an infection. The target group is primarily people with fatigue and post-exertion malaise (PEM).
Access to the outpatient clinic is based on the recommendation of the treating family doctor and is prepared through an online survey and the transmission of preliminary findings. As soon as the documents are complete, the outpatient clinic will make an appointment, the clinic says. This structured process is intended to achieve the best possible control. In the first few weeks of its operation, the outpatient clinic initially contacted well over 100 patients who had registered on the sports and rehabilitation medicine section’s waiting list.
“The concept relies on coordinated, intersectoral and interdisciplinary cooperation in order to provide those affected and their families with the best possible support in what is often a very challenging situation,” it says. The four departments of general medicine, neurology, psychosomatics, sports and rehabilitation medicine jointly manage the new care offering. (AZ)
