Agnieszka Holland is one of the most popular and respected Polish directors. The love for art and culture was encouraged in her by her father, Henryk Holland, who was a communist activist and famous journalist. He often took her to the cinema, theater and concerts. In an interview with Krystyna Naszkowska for the collection “We, Children of Communists”, she talked about her memories with her father. He died when she was 13.
Agnieszka Holland about her father
– I think he had a rich personality, a complex mind. It seems to me that he looked at life in general, at its various aspects. It could not be defined too simply or forced into a rigid framework. My father started communicating very early, almost like a child – said Agnieszka Holland to Krystyna Naszakowska.

Politics were often discussed in Holland’s home. However, the director does not remember the moment how her parents reacted to Stalin’s death. After the first period after the war, her father was very disappointed and she focused on non-political issues. He began to travel around the world more and became interested in culture.
– My cultural ventures came thanks to my father. He took me to the theatre, cinema and concerts, she said.
Agnieszka Holland’s father was described by Igor Newerle in one of his books.
– He wrote that his father came to a meeting of the editors of “Mały Przegląd”, it was a magazine in Poland for Jewish youth, created on the initiative of Korczak and Newerle, edited by children and youth. He showed up there as an eight or nine year old with a gun and said he wanted a place for revolutionary youth. Then I saw my father from a different perspective, she admitted.
“She became a communist under the influence of her father”
Agnieszka Holland’s parents met after the war. At the same time they were studying at the University of Warsaw.
– (Mom – editor’s note) there was a very beautiful woman, so radiant – wheat, blue-eyed blonde. I know it was popular, especially among Jewish communists, but not only. Konwicki once told me: “We all loved your mother.” She became a communist under her father’s influence, Holland said.
In her opinion, her parents were a mismatched couple. Two years before her death, Agnieszka Holland’s father moved out of the house.
– Of course, his mother took him out – noted the director.
Later they separated. The journalist Irena Holland became involved with the publicist Stanisław Brodzki, who was also a Jewish communist. Henryk Holland died on December 19, 1961. He died by jumping from the sixth floor of his own apartment during an investigation by the Security Service. His daughter found out about his death from the newspaper.
– When he died, my mother, without telling me anything, sent me to winter camps. She also asked the teacher not to communicate with the media. Well, I found out about my father’s death from a newspaper – it was bought by a friend I shared a bedroom with. Furthermore, there was only one obituary for my father, and the authorities only agreed to this one. And it happened to be in the newspaper that my friend brought. She was reading it and suddenly she shouted: “You, Agnieszka, isn’t this your ancestor like this?” Then I saw it – Agnieszka Holland appeared.
After she returned from winter camp, her mother told her the truth. His father killed himself.
