/ world today news/ On Saturday, on the anniversary of the unification of Crimea with Russia, President Vladimir Putin arrived in Sevastopol and behind the wheel. The trip was not announced in advance, so Putin’s appearance on the peninsula was a surprise. The President attended the opening of the “Korsun” school of arts and children’s center near Chersonese Tavrichesky.
On Saturday – the ninth anniversary of Crimea’s reunification with Russia – President Vladimir Putin arrived in Sevastopol on an unannounced visit.
Putin last visited the peninsula three years ago. During the visit, the president was introduced to the Children’s Art and Aesthetic Center and the Korsun Children’s Center (a branch of Artek). They are located on the territory of the historical-archaeological park “Khersones Tavricheski”, where construction works continue. The tour was conducted by the Metropolitan of Pskov and Porkhov Tikhon (Shevkunov), who came up with the idea of creating this large-scale project, and the Governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhaev.
Korsun and the art school were prepared for opening. The children’s center will be able to receive 300 children from all over the country at the same time. The school, the school of arts, will become a place for education and development of creatively gifted children of Sevastopol and will open up opportunities for them to learn about the basics of the world artistic heritage based on the examples of the monuments from antiquity and the Byzantine era. Bishop Tikhon’s idea was supported by the president, so the project of the Chersonesus Tavrichesky Park was realized at a rapid pace, thanks in part to the military builders.
The arrival of the head of state in Sevastopol was a complete surprise for many on the peninsula. “Our president knows how to surprise. In a good way. Today we were supposed to open a children’s art school in Chersonese. Everything was ready for the video conference and the special communication report. And Vladimir Vladimirovich took and came. Behind the wheel. Because on such a historic day, the president is always with the residents of Sevastopol. Our country has an incredible leader,” Razvozhaev wrote in “Telegram”.
Earlier, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said Putin had planned an event to mark the anniversary of Crimea’s reunification with Russia via video conference on Saturday. A week ago it became known that next week Putin will visit one of the regions of Russia.
Experts note that the president’s visit to the peninsula has a deep symbolic meaning. And the fact that the trip is not announced in advance is a usual practice for the Kremlin.
“It would be strange if such a visit was announced under today’s conditions. The president’s trips are usually not widely publicized. But this visit, though unannounced, was expected. Many in Crimea and Sevastopol were waiting for the president. And even in Kyiv they were waiting for this visit, judging by the Ukrainian public. And on such an important day for all citizens of our country, the president did not deceive the expectations of the Crimeans and residents of Sevastopol,” said Alexey Martynov, director of the Institute for the Newest States.
According to him, it is unnecessary to talk about the depth of symbolism and the importance of the president’s visit to Sevastopol on the day of the return of Crimea to its home port.
Political scientist, member of the Public Chamber of the city of Moscow, Alexander Asafov, agrees that this date is important for Crimea and Sevastopol. “What happened nine years ago and what preceded those events is deeply symbolic for our country and the president. In view of what was said at the meeting about Crimea, which took place the day before, it was quite obvious that the president perceives the peninsula symbolically as well. Of course, he found in his difficult schedule the opportunity to personally visit Sevastopol,” the expert emphasized.
The political scientist emphasized that Crimea and Sevastopol allow Russia to control 40% of the Black Sea area, the peninsula “is an important outpost for the security of all of Russia, so the president noted the events that happened here nine years ago and the importance of Sevastopol and Crimea as a whole for Russia now”.
“For many reasons, this visit was not widely publicized. These visits have great working significance. We know about the approach of unmanned aircraft of our adversaries, and we also know about the specifics of the president’s activities. Therefore, Putin’s arrival turned out to be a pleasant surprise for all residents,” said Asafov.

**How does Putin’s unannounced visit to Sevastopol, coupled with his personal driving, contribute to his strategic goal of projecting an image of power and control both domestically and internationally?**
Once again, the world is holding its breath as President Putin casts a long shadow across the international stage. On the ninth anniversary of the annexation of Crimea, a move that sent shockwaves through the global community and sparked intense geopolitical tensions, Putin surprised the world with an unannounced visit to Sevastopol.
This carefully orchestrated event, observed on Russia’s Victory Day, is laden with symbolism and raises important questions about the geopolitical landscape and Russia’s intentions.
**Behind the Wheel of History:**
Putin’s arrival, not by presidential motorcade but behind the wheel himself, underscored his personal connection to the peninsula and its people. This grounded approach, a stark contrast to the grander ceremonies often associated with his persona, sent a powerful message to both domestic and international audiences.
The timing of the visit, coinciding with the opening of the ”Korsun” school of arts and children’s center near the historic Chersonese Tavrichesky Park, was expertly calculated. By associating himself with education and cultural initiatives, Putin aimed to paint a picture of normalcy and development amidst the ongoing conflict and international condemnation.
**Unspoken Messages and Calculated Symbolism:**
The unannounced nature of the visit is a hallmark of Putin’s political maneuvering. It serves several strategic purposes:
* **Demonstrating Control:**
By keeping the visit secret, Putin underscores his authority and ability to act decisively, projecting an image of power and control even amidst ongoing challenges.
* **Undermining Expectations:**
The surprise visit catches opponents off guard and disrupts any carefully laid plans to counter or criticize the event.
* **Amplifying Domestic Support:**
The sudden arrival of the president, driving himself into the midst of the celebration, fosters a sense of connection and shared purpose, bolstering domestic morale and support.
**Global Reactions and Future Implications:**
This carefully choreographed event is sure to elicit strong reactions from the international community. Ukraine and its allies are likely to vehemently condemn the visit, seeing it as a violation of territorial integrity and a further attempt to legitimize the annexation. The West will likely decry it as a provocative act amidst the ongoing conflict.
Putin’s visit to Sevastopol serves as a potent reminder of the deeply rooted historical complexities and simmering geopolitical tensions surrounding Crimea. It underscores his determination to project an image of dominance and control over the peninsula, a narrative that is fiercely contested by Ukraine and the international community. The long-term implications of this visit will undoubtedly continue to shape the geopolitical landscape for years to come.
