Milan Design Week Boosts City Revenue by 13.7%

Milan Design Week 2024: A Testament to Design’s Economic and Cultural Power

Despite global economic uncertainties, Milan Design Week 2024 shattered records, showcasing the enduring power of design as a global force driving both economic growth and cultural innovation. The first Milan Design (Eco) System report, a collaboration between Salone del Mobile.Milano and the Politecnico University’s Department of Design, highlights the remarkable impact of the event on the city and beyond.

The report reveals that Milan Design Week generated a staggering 275 million euros in revenue for the city, marking a 13.7 percent increase from the previous year. This financial success underscores the event’s significance as a major driver of economic activity.

"The impact and effects of the Salone on the city go way beyond this financial figure," emphasized Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala. "It is also thanks to the many opportunities for encounters inspired by the Salone, that the entire city is involved," he added, highlighting the event’s role in fostering a vibrant and connected design community.

A Global Hub for Creativity:

Salone del Mobile.Milano 2024 attracted a record-breaking 370,824 visitors, with a remarkable 53.93 percent hailing from international destinations. The fair showcased the work of 1,950 exhibitors representing 36 countries, solidifying Milan’s position as a global epicenter for design talent and innovation.

The event’s economic ripple effect extended far beyond the fairgrounds, boosting various sectors throughout the city. Hospitality services witnessed a 10.6 percent rise to 121.4 million euros, while restaurants and food services reported a 10.1 percent increase to 85.9 million euros. Shopping excursions also saw a notable 9.2 percent surge to 66.6 million euros.

Milan Design Week’s influence transcended traditional boundaries. The city staged over 1,326 events across its design districts, demonstrating a vibrant and decentralized approach to design discourse. Individual companies led the charge, organizing 50 percent of these events, followed by design studios (14.9 percent), creative collectives (9.8 percent), and architectural firms (7.3 percent).

A Flourishing Design Ecosystem:

Milan’s commitment to nurturing a robust design ecosystem is evident in its steady growth.

Between 2009 and 2023, the number of design companies in Milan and its surrounding areas surged by an impressive 66 percent, according to data from the Milan, Monza, Brianza, and Lodi Chambers of Commerce.

Today, 3,263 cultural and creative companies contribute to Milan’s thriving design landscape, while 16,000 students pursue design-related studies in universities, private schools, and institutes throughout the city.

Designing for the Future:

The Salone del Mobile.Milano president, Maria Porro, underscored the importance of the collaboration between public and private entities in shaping the event’s future and its role on the global stage. She emphasized the need for ongoing dialogue and innovation to maintain Milan’s leading position in the design world.

Renowned urban sociologist and author, Charles Landry, further elaborated on Milan’s role in creating a better future during a keynote address. Landry stressed the vital need for cross-sector partnerships, advocating for the merging of fields like science and design to tackle pressing global challenges.

"Solving complex problems rarely happens when operating in a silo," Landry stated, highlighting the city’s diverse community of craftspeople, engineers, urban designers, policymakers, and creative professionals.

Milan: A City Defined by Design

Landry prompted the audience to contemplate Milan’s transformative potential, asking: "Is this a city of projects, or is the city the project?"

His thought-provoking question echoed throughout the week, urging participants to envision Milan as a living laboratory for

sustainable and human-centered design solutions.

The 63rd edition of Salone del Mobile.Milano, slated for April 8-13 at Fiera Milano Rho, will doubtlessly continue this tradition of pertinence, pushing the boundaries of design innovation while solidifying Milan’s position as a global design capital.
