Britain’s Oldest Man Dies at 112

The world’s oldest man, John ‘Alfred Tinniswood’, died yesterday at the age of 112 at a nursing home in Southport, north-west England.

John was born on August 26, 1912, just a few months after the sinking of the Titanic. He was nearly 14 years older than the UK’s longest-serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth. He was a veteran of World War II.

He first worked in the post office and later as an accountant for major oil companies until 1972 when he retired. But he remained active into his old age volunteering his services at the local Plantations Protestant church, where he even preached.

He and Blodwen’s wife met at a ball in Liverpool and married in 1942. They were together for 44 consecutive years, until 1986, when his wife died. They had one daughter, Susan, who is now 81 years old. Susan gave him four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was a staunch supporter of Liverpool, which had been founded just 20 years before he was born. It is characteristic that out of the total 66 trophies that the “Reds” have won in the English league, only two had not been won by John. The championship titles of 1901 and 1906.

In 2012, when he turned a century old, he received, as usual, the first birthday card from the then monarch of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth. In total, he has received 12 such cards, while as his family points out, “he was genuinely happy when he received wishes for his birthday and also with every message of support.”

A few months before he turned 100, he moved into the nursing home and according to his family his kindness and enthusiasm for life was an inspiration to both the staff who cared for him and the people he interacted with.

In an interview with the BBC, he stated that in his younger years he was “quite active” and that he really liked walking. To those who asked him about the secret of longevity, he replied that it was due to “simple luck”, advising to avoid excesses and to maintain moderation.

“John always wanted to say thank you. So, on his behalf, we thank those who have cared for him over the years,” his family emphasized in their statement, while asking that donations in his memory be made to the charity of his choice, Age UK.

## 112-Year-Old John Tinniswood, World’s Oldest Man, Passes Away

**Southport, ‌England -** John ‘Alfred’ Tinniswood, recognized as the ⁢world’s oldest man, passed away yesterday at the age of 112⁣ in a Southport nursing home. Born on August 26, 1912, Tinniswood lived through a century marked by immense change, witnessing events like the sinking of the Titanic ‌and the reigns of multiple British ‌monarchs.

His life spanned nearly a century⁢ and a ⁤half, making him almost 14 years older than ⁢Queen Elizabeth II,‍ the longest-serving UK ‍monarch. Tinniswood served in World War ⁤II⁢ and dedicated his professional life to service, working initially‍ as a postman before transitioning to a career as an accountant for major ⁢oil companies, retiring ⁢in 1972.

However, his commitment to community service continued well ⁤into⁢ his twilight years. Tinniswood was an⁣ active member of the local Plantations Protestant church, where his faith led ⁣him to preach to his congregation.

A devoted husband ⁣and father, Tinniswood met his wife, Blodwen, at a ball in Liverpool and they married in 1942. Their 44-year marriage was filled ⁣with love and companionship until Blodwen’s passing in 1986. They had one daughter,⁢ Susan, ‌now 81, who ⁤blessed Tinniswood with four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Tinniswood remained a lifelong ⁣supporter of his beloved Liverpool Football Club, ‌founded just two decades before his birth. A testament to his longevity, he ⁣had witnessed the club secure 64 of its 66 English league trophies, only missing out on the championships of 1901 and ‌1906.

In 2012, when Tinniswood celebrated his centenary, he received a special birthday card ‌from Queen Elizabeth II, a tradition he⁣ cherished.
